What to Watch Next: Bloodline, Samurai Jack and Saul

A weekly look at the best shows to watch on TV and streaming services.

Anyone who has been waiting for the TV season to wind down before catching up on their favorite shows is in for a rude awakening. There is no offseason for TV anymore. And if you’re on IGN, there’s a pretty good chance that you won’t be satisfied by the low budget reality series on network TV this summer.

Fortunately, you have a lot options when it comes to streaming services and On-Demand television shows. Each week, IGN offers a curated experience of four series that we recommend from a variety of genres. This includes a few series that don’t always get coverage on IGN. And as always, we’ll let you know why these shows should be your next TV binge.

Enjoy our picks for this week!

Bloodline

Release Date: May 26, 2017 (Season 3)

The third and final season of Bloodline is back on Netflix. And if you haven’t checked it out before, now is the perfect time to binge through the first two seasons. Bloodline was conceived by the creators of Damages, another overlooked drama series that will eventually be featured in this column. For this show, Kyle Chandler, Linda Cardellini, and Norbert Leo Butz play siblings in the Rayburn family, and their darkest secrets emerge when their older brother, Danny (Ben Mendelsohn) returns to town.

Much like Damages before it, Bloodlines is a very twisty drama that has a willingness to let its main characters do despicable things while challenging the loyalties of the audience. It’s a really well-acted and well-written series that has largely flown under the radar of Netflix’s more established shows. But this is a saga worth following to its bitter end.

Better Call Saul
Better Call Saul

Release Date: April 10, 2017 (Season 3)

No one seriously expected Better Call Saul to be as good as the show that spawned it, but this Breaking Bad prequel series has earned its place among TV’s best dramas. The third season is currently on AMC, and it’s heading into deeper Breaking Bad territory with both the title character and Jonathan Banks’ fan favorite, Mike Ehrmantraut. Plus, there’s a very familiar face who is extremely prominent this season.

The first two seasons are on Netflix, and like its predecessor, Better Call Saul lends itself to binge watching. The amazing thing about this show is amount of sympathy it generates for Jimmy. The future Saul Goodman keeps trying to be the best version of himself in a world that won’t accept him as anything other than what he eventually becomes. Bob Odenkirk is amazingly endearing even when Jimmy is clearly in the wrong. Without giving away too much, this show also hints at Jimmy’s life after Breaking Bad ended, which only makes the events of this series even darker.

Boardwalk Empire
Boardwalk Empire

Release Date: September 19, 2010

In another era of television, Boardwalk Empire could have been the biggest show around. But in the era of Peak TV, Terence Winter’s Prohibition-era crime drama was overshadowed by other cable dramas. Unfortunately, that means that the fantastic performances on this series haven’t gotten the exposure that they deserve.

Although Boardwalk Empire’s primary focus is on Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson, the show featured amazing turns by Michael Shannon as a crazed Prohibition agent, Michael Kenneth Williams as a gangster, Charlie Cox as an enforcer, and Jack Huston as an emotionally and physically wounded veteran whose face was lost in the great war. If you don’t have HBO GO or HBO Now, all five seasons of Boardwalk Empire are currently on Amazon Prime. But pace yourself on this one...it can be a heartbreaker.

Samurai Jack
samurai jack

Release Date: August 10, 2001

It took over a decade, but Genndy Tartakovsky finally returned to television for Samurai Jack’s fifth season, and the new episodes on Adult Swim have been everything that we could have wanted. It’s even more intense and mature than before, and the show is finally giving us some closure for Phil Lamarr’s title character.

The series just wrapped up, but the fifth season episodes can be found on Adult Swim’s site. If you want to follow the adventures of this time-lost Samurai from the very beginning, Hulu has the first four seasons available for streaming. It’s a masterwork of character and animation that made Tartakovsky a legend in his field. If you love action cartoons, Samurai Jack is the right show for you.
