Netflix's Sense8 is a show constantly in motion, in front of and behind the camera. When IGN caught up with the production in Chicago last summer along with a small group of reporters, they were halfway through filming Season 2. They'd been city and country hopping every two weeks (Terrence Mann mentioned the show goes to 15 or 16 different countries for Season 2), but on this sunny and breezy day, the action was happening at the tranquil quad at the The University of Chicago. Some of the Sensates were stopping by to visit a professor who has an integral role to play in Season 2.
Whispers is still a factor, as is his link to Will. The Sensates are coming together as a team. Angelica is maybe not dead. In short, the road of Season 2 twists and turns. We learned a little about what you can expect:
Season 2 doesn't waste any time jumping ahead. Jamie Clayton (Nomi) said, "The thing that surprised me the most about Season 2 was how fast it takes off, and the direction in which it goes. We didn't know anything that was going to happen after the end of Season 1. Season 2 takes off so quickly, and it's fast and mad and amazing and sexy and raw and we learn -- oh my god, it's so many things. I had no idea it could go in that direction and so quickly."
Will saved Riley in Season 1, but the tables are turning in Season 2. Tuppence Middleton (Riley) told us, "It's a massive role reversal this season, because after having been kind of saved herself, she becomes more of the caretaker of the two. She has to be strong and practical and put all of that emotional stuff behind her and really come through for Will and the whole cluster, because she was at a very vulnerable point in her story and her life when we last saw her. Now Will has sacrificed all that for her, and she has to come up and be on the front line now. She has had to toughen up a lot in the second season and that Will, as a cop, has to take a step backwards -- that's quite unusual for him and, I think, makes him feel quite vulnerable."
Will interacted with Whispers at the end of Season 1. In order to keep the Sensates safe from Whispers' prying eyes, they keep Will drugged and unconscious. He won't be sleeping through Season 2 though. Brian J. Smith (Will) confirmed his character will have an active part to play. Smith said, "He is [awake]. But it's more, like Lana called it, a 'fugue state.' He made eye contact with Whispers in the last episode last year. That creates a lot of problems, but something that I wasn't expecting is that it also creates a lot of opportunities. too. Lana keeps calling it 'the twilight.' It's this sort of in-between state of being conscious and completely drugged out, but also super raw so that he's really able to tap into some of this subconscious Sensate stuff which involves going into memory and into the past. He's trying to solve mysteries that happened a long time ago that are affecting what happen now."
Wolfgang has blood on his hands, and as you might expect, his actions have had repercussions. "Killing my whole family, certainly has some consequences," Max Riemelt (Wolfgang) said, "I have to deal with these other people who like to take over Berlin and I have to find my place in this crime dynasty of Berlin gangsters."
In the midst of that, he and Kala (Tina Desai) are still working out their feelings for each other. Wolfgang told Kala to marry Rajan, but it's tricky. Desai said, "On every level, it's complicated because there's no finality to anything because we're Sensates."
Desai, at least, gets where Wolfgang was coming from with his decision to push her away. "I think it was more of him taking responsibility and caring so much that he wouldn't want to put me or my life in jeopardy because of how too much of his life would become after that action," she said.
Daryl Hannah couldn't say much about what Angelica is up to in Season 2, but did note "it's safe to say" the character has more screen time than she did in Season 1.
"Especially in Season 1, there were so many mysteries to me still about my character that I didn't even really understand. Obviously in Season 2, I get to learn a lot more about her and what drives her and everything. I just really put all my faith and trust Lana [Wachowski] and Lilly [Wachowski] and their vision of everything in the first season. Now I'm starting to see what drives her," Hannah explained.
Season 1 was about the Sensates learning about their unique connections to each other and the danger those connections put them in. Season 2 will see them coming together more and calling upon each other's skills on a regular basis. "What happened in Season 1 is that we're all understanding the fact that we're Sensates and understanding how we visit and when it would happen and all of those things. Now we've figured that out," Desai said. She said we'll see the cluster come together more because they know who to turn to when they need a certain power. They're communicating much more.
Middleton added there's more of exploring the intimacy of the Sensate connection - a la Season 1's memorably orgy scene. "There's definitely something that explores that connection more. I think that's something that Lana's really interested in, is having that very positive message about sex. You watch it and, yes, there are people that are not physically there and conceptually it's about this connection that extends beyond two people and is shared in this group between this cluster," she said, "There's more of that coming, definitely, as much as there's more of all of the different things that existed in the first season. It's all of those ideas and concepts that are expanded upon."
Executive producer Lana Wachowski pulls the threads of the plot together in an unusual fashion. Multiple cast members remarked upon Wachowski's vision and having to stay on their toes for new directions. Riemelt said, "You just need to trust Lana. She has it all in her head. She's also very experimental. Sometimes you just need to trust her in her ability of having a vision and collecting as much as she wants and needs and putting it all together. Sometimes she comes up with totally new ideas or lines you never read before because they're not in script, so you have to stay flexible."
Hannah also praised Wachowksi's style, remarking, "Lana has this world of imagination and creativity that just never stops. It is always evolving and coming up with things and expanding and deepening and developing as we shoot."
Mann talked about how Wachowski pulls inspiration from things happening on the spot, explaining, "She's always drawing from everything -- from the moment, from the actors, from the lighting, from the set, from this complex and beautiful story which is essentially about love and interconnecting. It's just unbelievable."
Season 2 of Sense8 arrives on Netflix on Friday, May 5.
