The Fate of the Furious Is the Second Film of 2017 to Make $1 Billion

It had to be fate.

The latest edition to the Fast and Furious series has surpassed the $1 billion milestone at the global box office after a very successful opening month.

The Fate of the Furious has hit the $1 billion mark over the weekend, bringing its total to about $1.06 billion. It is only the second film in the franchise to pass that milestone, its predecessor Furious 7 being the other to do so. According to Box Office Mojo, this makes Fate the 21st highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide, unadjusted for inflation, surpassing 2016's biggest film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Take a look at updated tallies for the entire Fast and Furious franchise below:

The latest Furious title released with the biggest global opening of all time at $542 million, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and continued to rule the box office in its second weekend.

This strong release positioned the movie to hit the coveted $1 billion mark, an achievement held by only 29 movies before it, including Furious 7, which ended its run with $1.52 billion worldwide.

Of the 30 $1 Billion grossing films, four are held by Universal titles. Only two movies have hit the mark this year, with the first being Disney's live-action remake Beauty and the Beast.

The Fate of the Furious is the eighth title in the fast-paced action series which released on April 14 and, according to IGN's review, kicks right into high gear.
