Venom #150 - $5.99
STL043712

By Various Artists and Writers | Cover Artist Gerardo Sandoval (Marvel Comics)

Eddie Brock is back as Venom and Marvel is celebrating by releasing this oversized issue that’s special for a few reasons.

Writer Mike Costa and artist Tradd Moore will be delivering the main feature about Eddie back in the suit, while fan-favorite Venom creators David Michelinie and Ron Lim deliver the backup story. This story will finally reveal how former Venom host Flash Thompson lost the symbiote, which has been a lingering question since the end of Brian Michael Bendis’ Guardians of the Galaxy run where Venom was a member of the team.

Also, Venom's series will be returning to its original numbering, hence the big #150 on the cover. The rest of Marvel’s long-running titles will also be returning to their classic numbering for this fall’s Marvel Legacy, so in a way Venom is leading the charge for the entire Marvel line with this issue.

I Am Groot #1 - $3.99
STL043688

Writer Christopher Hastings | Artist Flaviano | Cover Artist Marco D'Alfonso (Marvel Comics)

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 currently in theaters, there’s little wonder why Marvel decided to release a new comic starring Baby Groot himself. The tiny guy is separated from his team and lost on a strange planet, so he’s got to use his wits to find his way back home. Sounds like a big challenge for an underdeveloped being with a three-word vocabulary.

The Old Guard #4 - $3.99
STL044353

Writer Greg Rucka | Artist Leandro Fernandez (Image Comics)

The Old Guard is, hands down, one of the best new comic books of the year.

A secret group of immortal mercenaries, each member hundreds of years old, have been discovered and they must get to the bottom of who’s after them. As the story unfolds, we learn more about the squad’s long, long history and their brutal histories full of blood, sex, and intrigue.

While Greg Rucka crafts a twisting narrative with sharp dialogue and rich characters, it’s Leandro Fernandez who creates the stylish and engrossing storytelling experience. It’s hard not to read the story straight through one time for the thrill of it and then go back again just to drool over the art and wonder how Fernandez pulled it off.

Detective Comics #957 - $2.99
STL042871

Writers Genevieve Valentine, James Tynion IV | Artist Carmen Nunez Carnero | Cover Artist Eddy Barrows (DC Comics)

As the rather kick-ass Eddy Barrows cover implies, this is a Spoiler-centric story where Stephanie Brown decides the return of the villainous Wrath presents such danger that she must cut off Batman and take him on by herself. Spoiler is a fan-favorite character that has undergone some big changes throughout the New 52 and DC Rebirth, so it’s great to finally see her take center stage in a big story that looks like it’s going to give us more of what we’ve always loved about the character.

Any Batman book runs the risk of the other characters being overshadowed by the Dark Knight, so Detective Comics has been a real treat with how it showcases each team member their time to shine in the spotlight.

Wonder Woman #23 - $2.99
STL042959

Writer Greg Rucka | Artist Liam Sharp (DC Comics)

With Greg Rucka leaving Wonder Woman as of Issue #25, we’re now getting the final word on one of the two story threads he began at Rebirth’s launch with artist Liam Sharp. Rucka’s entire run has been intimately focused on getting to the truth of Wonder Woman’s mythology -- the truth has utmost value to Diana above anything else, after all -- so we’re ready to see her finally cut through the lies and get to the bottom of everything.
