Director of Sausage Party Will Direct a Jetsons Movie

Expect a less raunchy movie this time around.

Warner Bros. has plans for a movie based on the classic cartoon The Jetsons, and Conrad Vernon is reportedly tapped to direct, according to THR.

Vernon recently was the co-director of the raunchy food-based comedy Sausage Party, which starred, amongst others, Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig.

The tale of the Jetson family and their dog Astro is unlikely to follow in the hard-R footsteps of that movie, but Vernon has worked on more family-friendly fare as well. He co-directed Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. Clearly, he is a veteran of animated film, and should be up to the task of directing an animated Jetsons movie. There has been talk of the futuristic family being turned into a live-action movie for a while, but the hiring of Vernon pretty much locks them in for the animation route.

While the adventures of George Jetson, Jane his wife, daughter Judy, and his boy Elroy feel fairly iconic, in truth there were actually only three seasons and 75 episodes of The Jetsons made. On top of that, the first season ran in 1962-63, whereas the second and third seasons ran between 1985 and 1987. They previously made a film, Jetsons: The Movie, in 1990, but that's forever ago in pop culture terms.

Chris Morgan is the author of The Comic Galaxy of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and the novel The Ash Heap of History. Wisely or not, he's also on Twitter.
