A Solid Gold Darth Vader Mask Is Being Sold in Japan

It's 33 pounds of pure 24-karat gold.

A Japanese jeweler is selling a solid 24-karat gold Darth Vader mask for 154 million yen/$1.4 million USD.

The New York Times reports Ginza Tanaka will start selling the headgear at the company’s flagship store in Tokyo on May 4 in celebration of Star Wars’ 40th Anniversary. The mask is life-sized, measuring at exactly 10.4 inches wide and 11.8 inches high. Check out images of the mask below.

“Unfortunately, you cannot wear this mask because it is too heavy," a Ginza Tanaka spokesperson confirmed to The New York Times, as it roughly weighs 33 pounds. It took 10 goldsmiths and three months to mold and assemble the headgear.

The Japanese retailer set the price of one gram of gold at about 4,900 yen/$44 USD. Meaning, the mask's gold is valued at $658,000, half the asking price. Ginza Tanaka will also be selling gold coins with Yoda or Luke Skywalker engraved on them for $1,200 if the mask is just out of your price range.

Ginza Tanaka revealed the mask was made in anticipation of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opens in theaters on December 15, 2017. Check out why the Jedi's failings might've inspired Luke Skywalker to end the Order.
