Oculus, Insomniac Heads on VR Industry, Year One Sales

Driving down price is the next important step.

Today at DICE Summit 2017, Oculus VP of Content Jason Rubin and Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price discussed the VR industry, year one sales and what the future holds for the platform.

When asked by Price about the large gap between the initial expectations for VR and the current state of platform, Rubin reaffirmed Oculus' "unwavering belief" that VR is the "next big thing." He then explained that "when it comes to year one sales," he thinks "there was a disconnect between what the industry was saying" and the expectations from "peripherals of the industry that were following the normal hype curve of technology."

As far as the future of virtual reality is concerned, Rubin said Oculus "knocked it out of the park" when it comes to the quality of the Rift, so now it's a matter of actively driving the price down to increase the rate of adoption. He highlighted how the price for a VR-capable PC has become more affordable, noting that Oculus understands the price of Rift needs to be lower as well.

Price also asked Rubin about Oculus' stance on an open VR platform, to which Rubin said, "we support an open standard," adding, "if there was an open platform, we would be a big part of that open platform."

We had the opportunity to speak with Rubin last year about virtual reality's potential and the ongoing wait for technology's killer app. For our thoughts on Oculus VR, read IGN's review of the Rift.
