Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger has explained how the latest movie in the franchise will seek to improve on some of the confusion created by previous Terminator films.
The actor told Business Insider that, with James Cameron and Deadpool's Tim Miller behind the wheel for the reported next film, Schwarzenegger is confident the new movie will fix and simplify the formula.
“I think [James] Cameron and Tim [Miller] came up with a concept where they can continue on with the T-800 but make a whole new movie,” he said. “What they are doing now with this one is basically to just take a few very basic characters, like Linda Hamilton’s character and my character, and dismiss everything else. Just move away from all these rules of the timeline and other characters.”
Schwarzenegger believes there's plenty of ground to cover with the T-800 model he portrayed, saying “He’s a machine, can be destructive, can do things human beings can’t do, but at the same time when newer technology comes along the character suddenly is vulnerable and that makes him even more interesting.”
He believes that the downfall of the previous film in the series, Terminator Genisys, came from a mix of the confusing time traveling plot and taking away the vulnerability of his character. He sees the change in direction, and the return of Cameron to the franchise, as a chance to correct some of those issues.
Last month Schwarzenegger also confirmed that the new film will completely ignore Genisys and Cameron shared the news that Linda Hamilton will reprise her role as the iconic Sarah Conor.
The unnamed Terminator reboot is slated for release on July 26, 2019, after some initial delays.
