Ash vs. Evil Dead returned to New York Comic Con today with a panel discussion (moderated by IGN's own Terri Schwartz) and a surprise screening of the Season Three premiere. (Check out our review.)
They also showed off the season three teaser trailer, which seemed to focus mainly on early episodes though there were glimpses of things that probably happen further down the road. We see a pair of high school girls, one of whom is revealed to be a daughter Ash never knew about, scrubbing graffiti off a locker as someone in a school mascot costume stalks creepily toward them. Kelly seems to have paired up with a biker-looking guy as both of them wear matching leather outfits and carry matching machine guns. We see Ruby walking around with her entrails hanging out, tons of fighting, Pablo doing magic-like things and Ash promising to protect his daughter from Ruby's machinations. He says, "Never get between a papa bear and his cub." Possibly not Ash's best tagline but it's serviceably goofy.
When asked where Kelly would end up in season three, actor Dana DeLorenzo said, "It’s a culmination of everything we’ve been building up and everything that she’s gone through. Now she gets to take someone else under her wing."
“A theme of this show for Season Three is everyone fulfilling their destiny," DeLorenzo said. "And Kelly gets painted in this corner, catch-22 -- bloody corner, I might add, always bloody -- and she can’t think or fight her way out of this situation so she snaps. Kelly's going to get her revenge but we’re going to see what happens because maybe it’s not what she wanted at all.” She went on to say that Kelly's showdown with evil will change her forever and that “it will rival the Kill Bill fight”.
Ray Santiago said of his character, "Pablo fulfills his destiny as well and really starts to hone in on his brujo powers. Evil sees Pablo differently and Pablo sees evil differently and...the illegal has powers this season so watch out everybody, watch out! I finally get to kick some ass."
Despite dying in Season Two it was revealed that Lee Majors, who plays Ash's father Brock, will be back again, albeit in ghost form. Bruce Campbell even said that he had more screentime with Majors this season that he did when his character was still alive.
Ash's family looks to take center stage in Season Three. When asked if his character would change in response to having a daughter, Campbell said he never lies to her and would become "a more substantial person." Having Brandy around, he said, would allow Ash to become more three-dimensional.
Perhaps the comedic highlight of the panel, aside from Campbell handing out money to Q&A participants who said nice things about him, was when, in response to an unrelated question, he jokingly took umbrage with people who are unwilling to pay for the Starz premium service. "I'm saying this because I hear a lot of whining and moaning. 'Ohhhh, I can't afford Starz. Boo hooooo.' You don't need a car! Not in New York City. Get rid of your f**king car and get Starz. What the hell is the problem? I'm sorry, sir, that was not directed directly at you."
The most tantalizing hint dropped was the suggestion that everything we've known so far in the Evil Dead continuity could be radically changed. When asked if the show might go back to medieval times, Campbell said, "I'll allude to the ending of the season, in that everything will be different. Really different. Really, really different. You're gonna f**king pick your jaw up off the floor at the end of this season. And I wish I could tell you because I would love to see your jaws drop right now. But no. Download the app and watch it yourselves."
Campbell teased, "The goal of this season is to crack it open, to crack the shell open. We're doing a little more into the Joseph Campbell mythology. Because Ash is not just a loser who lives in a trailer park; he is foretold in an ancient book. So why? Why him?"
And it wouldn't be Evil Dead if we didn't talk about something gross. Campbell promised this season would keep up the tradition of finding new and inventive ways to make audiences sick. In fact, he said, "I had a fight in a sperm bank this season. I'm...pretty much just going to end it right there."
