The Batman director Matt Reeves recently spoke to the possibility of his upcoming DC film serving as the start of a trilogy centered around the Dark Knight.
"I have ideas about an arc, but really, the important thing is just to start... you have to start with one," Reeves said in an interview with Fandango.
Reeves, who directed the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes, went on to add that "you have to start with a story that begins something," noting that the story arc for the trio of new Apes films wasn't mapped out beforehand.
"I would be lying if I could tell you that the arcs of Apes was already planned out, because it simply wasn't," he said, adding, "it's one of those things where that character was so potent, and the possibility was embedded from the beginning, but exactly how you've got from A to Z is not something that existed."
In the case of Dawn for the Planet of the Apes, Reeves said the story he wanted to tell was actually different from the one he was presented with, and so when he started work on Dawn, he had a general idea of where he wanted to go, but didn't know exactly how he was going to reach that point. He went on to note that he sees The Batman in the same way, saying it's "a kind of ambition for a series of stories, but really the most important thing is gonna be to tell a vital first story."
The Batman will star Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader, and, according to Reeves, will tell a "very emotional story" that features a "Noir-driven, detective version of Batman."
