Robert Downey Jr. recently shed light on how much longer he plans to appear as Iron Man in Marvel's Cinematic Universe.
Speaking to Australia's News.com, Downey Jr. said he doesn't want to overstay his welcome and will only remain involved in the MCU for as long as he's needed.
"Everyone says to me it's like a glove that fits so well. I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base," he explained. "I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [MCU movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it's embarrassing."
Downey Jr. noted that when the first Avengers released, he could have called it quits and said, "It's never going to get any better than that. Everybody stop." However, for him, "it's always about people and opportunities."
The actor is confirmed to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, which will be released on May 4, 2018. Downey Jr. has gone back and forth on whether he'll return for a fourth Iron Man movie. In September of 2014, he said there wouldn't be a fourth Iron Man film, only to say say there would the following month. Just last year, he said he's open to returning for Iron Man 4.
Downey Jr. reprises his role as Tony Stark for Spider-Man: Homecoming, which opens in theaters this Friday, July 7. Last month, it was reported that, instead of Iron Man, the sequel to Homecoming will feature a different supporting Marvel hero.
