At the panel for Preacher today at San Diego Comic-Con, a sequence was shown that introduces one of the comic book’s most infamous (and popular) villains, Herr Starr – and looked like it was spot on in terms of the tone and depiction of the character.
Preacher executive producer Seth Rogen noted that the next episode, following a tease earlier, “introduces the Grail more thoroughly.” The Grail is a religiously inclined organization and through them we’ll meet Herr Starr, who Rogen noted, “Is one of the most powerful men on the planet. In the comic, he’s one of the best characters.”
The sequence shown followed Starr (played by Pip Torrens) as one of many candidates/recruits trying to join The Grail – as we see him as one of many men lined up, naked initially, in front of those who will judge them. But Starr stands out immediately with his bald head, dead eye and two nipple rings connected by a chain.
The man in charge of the training asks, “Before we begin are they any questions?” Starr replies, “Do you validate parking?” One of the other recruits snickers but Starr stares at him – he’s not joking.
When he’s told they don’t validate, Starr replies, “$17.00 an hour and you don’t validate! That should have been stated beforehand so I may have found street parking!”
A montage sequence follows as Starr and the others go through rigorous physical tests, such as running through tires, all of which he does effortlessly. During a hand-to-hand combat lesson, a very large Grail member beats down one recruit after another. When it’s Starr’s turn he says, “I want everyone to know that what is about to transpire I take no pleasure in it.”
At first, the large guy once again looks to win as he quickly puts Starr in a chokehold… only for Starr to begin masturbating through his sweatpants. The other man, disgusted, relaxes his hold and Starr elbows him in the face, then kicks him in the balls. When the man falls to the ground, Starr calmly straightens his sweatshirt and walks away. As the instructor praises Starr for using a distraction “No matter how unseemly” to even the odds, Starr walks back to his fallen opponent and mercilessly beats him with a stick.
The recruits then go through training to use sexuality as a weapon and we see a handsome young man being romantic with a woman, who is succumbing to his charms. He tells her, “All you have to do is meet me at the train station with the microfiche.”
Starr is next and when he sits down with the woman, he immediately tells her, “Give me the microfiche you bitch or I’ll kill you and your family.”
Next is a test where Starr and two other recruits are tied to chairs in a circle that are electrified. The other two men scream in agony, but Starr just sits there calmly – and maybe even enjoying himself?
Finally, only Starr and one other recruit are left to choose from. They are standing next to each other at a shooting range. The other man shoots the gun several times and every time is a perfect hit on the head of the target. He tells Starr “Good luck” and hands him the gun. Starr aims at the target, then casually turns the gun towards his rival, shooting and killing him.
We then see Starr being told, “Welcome to the Grail” and he serenely replies, “The Grail…”
