The long-rumored and discussed character Doomfist is now live in Overwatch's Public Test Region, Blizzard announced today.
After a tease earlier this week, which also explained previously damage added to various parts of Overwatch's Numbani map, Doomfist has been playable as the latest hero to join Overwatch's lineup. The newest playable hero can deal ranged damage via his Hand Cannon and slam into the ground and knock enemies into the air via his Rocket Punch. And in the midst of battle, Doomfist can unleash his Meteor Strike to launch into the air and crash back down to earth.
A fictional news report on the Overwatch blog teased that Reaper broke Doomfist out of jail, allowing him to reclaim his gauntlet. Officially referred to as Akande Ogundimu in the report, he would be the third known character to bear the Doomfist mantle.
Originally a passing mention in the game's original animated trailer, Blizzard has said it began to expand his characters simply because of fan interest. In turn, that's led to repeated speculation that the character would be added as a playable hero. That speculation gained traction when players discovered that a new patch was internally referred to as the "Doomfist / Summer Games" update. Actor Terry Crews has also repeatedly petitioning that he be allowed to play the character.
Overwatch is also currently testing an update that will drastically reduce duplicate items in loot boxes, while Blizzard launched the Lunar Colony map last month.
