Nintendo's Tested Mario Kart Without the Blue Shell

"You know, sometimes life isn't fair"

Mario Kart 7 and 8 director, Kosuke Yabuki has revealed that Nintendo has tested the popular kart racer without the controversial Spiny (read: Blue) Shell item but concluded that the game didn't feel right without it.

When asked by Eurogamer about the frustrating nature of the nefarious Blue Shell - an item that almost always hits and hinders the racer in first place - and why it's included in the series, Yabuki spoke about the differences in what individuals will find fair.

"Something I personally really consider is the human emotion element of the play experience," Yabuki states "So for example playing Mario Kart - if you have something that feels unfair or makes you feel frustrated or makes you angry... Everyone is different in that respect. What you will feel is unfair might be different to someone else. As far as possible we want to avoid those feelings of frustration."

The director went on to discuss whether or not Nintendo has considered omitting the weapon altogether and that they are always trying to see what can be removed or added to the game.

"We have tried - or we are trying - to see what the game's like without the blue shell. When we've experimented without the blue shell, actually it feels like something's missing. Like there's something not quite enough in the game. So for now we've kept it in."

Yabuki then added some words of wisdom, stating "You know, sometimes life isn't fair. Sometimes in life you have something where you feel that's not right, and that's frustrating."

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe released earlier this year for Nintendo Switch and we thought it was amazing despite the Blue Shells.
