A new report detailing Justice League's reshoots suggests the Joss Whedon-directed portion of filming has run into scheduling issues, and that Whedon himself may not receive a co-directing credit for his work.
Sources have told Variety that the reshoots cost a reported $25 million and have gone on for two months, in part due to scheduling conflicts for the cast.
Possible spoilers for Justice League and spoilers for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them follow.
According to Variety, both Ezra Miller's work on the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel, which has begun shooting, and Henry Cavill's shooting for the sixth Mission: Impossible film have both factored into the reshoots. While WB can reportedly better accommodate for Miller's schedule, as Fantastic Beasts is a WB film, Cavill has had to jump back and forth between the two productions with more scheduling difficulties.
And because Cavill is reportedly not allowed to shave the mustache he grew for his character in Mission:Impossible, the Justice League team will have to reportedly remove it digitally in post-production.
End of spoilers
Variety's sources also suggest that Whedon, who stepped in to complete production when director Zack Snyder moved away from the project for personal reasons, will not receive a co-directing credit for his work. While it's unclear what exactly his credit may be, Variety points to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as precedence, which saw Tony Gilroy come in for that film's reshoots, after which he received a screenwriting credit on the film. In light of Rogue One's reshoots, IGN took a look at how the process is becoming increasingly common in Hollywood.
Whedon is reportedly leaving the action set piece work of Snyder largely intact, instead adding "connective tissue" and punched-up dialogue to bridge scenes.
IGN has reached out to Warner Bros. regarding Variety's report and will update this story should they comment.
During Warner Bros.' San Diego Comic-Con panel, for which IGN was in attendance, star Ray Fisher, who plays Cyborg in the film, described the reshoots as "brief, if anything," while the cast also teased the possibility of Superman's return in the film. Ben Affleck also addressed the recent reports suggesting he'd be leaving the DCEU while at the panel.
WB also confirmed a few films coming to the DC cinematic universe. Check out the gallery below to see every upcoming DC Extended Universe movie.
