John Wick Spin-Off Reportedly Eyed With Ballerina Thriller

Newly-optioned script tipped to be used for a possible John Wick spin-off.

Lionsgate has scooped up a female-led spec script called Ballerina that is apparently set to be used to launch a possible John Wick spin-off film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lionsgate reportedly beat out Warner Bros. and Universal for the rights to Ballerina, which will be produced by Basil Iwanyk. Iwanyk’s production company, Thunder Road Pictures, is behind the John Wick franchise.

Details remain thin but Ballerina apparently sees a young woman, trained and raised as an assassin, on the trail of the killers that murdered her family. The script is written by 23-year old Shay Hatten, currently working as an assistant writer for Robert Downey Jr.’s production company, Team Downey.

IGN can confirm Lionsgate has optioned the script for Ballerina with Iwanyk and Shay attached. However, while possible it may be connected to John Wick, that is not yet set in stone.

If Ballerina is folded into the John Wick universe, however, it may not be the only new addition to the franchise; earlier this year John Wick Chapter 2 director Chad Stahelski explained that he and screenwriter Derek Kolstad “basically almost have a prequel written,” though they'd rather “save that for other aspects of the property.” Stahelski  went on to note that, “Lionsgate is very interested in doing a John Wick TV show.”
