Infinity War Director Explains Thanos' More 'Casual' Costume

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.

Thanos looks a bit different in Avengers: Infinity War than viewers have seen during his previous Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances (note: his kicks), and director Joe Russo told IGN that is representative of a philosophical shift for the MCU Big Bad in the upcoming movie.

"[Thanos] has a more casual approach in this film, and it's very philosophical for him," explained Russo at San Diego Comic-Con. "It's part of his character definition. It's a spiritual journey for him to collect the Stones, and one with which he doesn't need armor. Once he starts acquiring the Stones, he doesn't need armor in the same way he did when he was a war lord. It's a very symbolic costume."

Make sure to watch our full Comic-Con interview with Russo below:

Thanos' new look was spotlighted at D23, as were his followers, the Black Order. The first footage from Avengers: Infinity War, which debuted at D23 and at San Diego Comic-Con, showed just how much of an epic threat Thanos will be to the Avengers. (Here's our reaction to the footage and full breakdown.)

But Russo said some of the most epic sequences from the footage, which feature Thanos using the Infinity Gauntlet to destroy a planet and hurl it at the Avengers, aren't even from the third act of the movie.

"It's a staggering level of scale in the films. Sometimes we're working on the third act in this movie and I'm like, 'How are we going to pull this off?' It's so big," he said. "[Thanos] has this incredible power -- he has universe altering power if he gets his hands on the Stones -- so I think people are going to be surprised at the scale in the movie."

Make sure to watch our full interview with Russo to find out how the new direction of Thor in Thor: Ragnarok affected Avengers: Infinity War, plus how much of the movie will be about explaining and assembling the Infinity Gauntlet.

We have plenty more MCU coverage coming out of San Diego Comic-Con. Check out our interview with Chris Hemsworth about how Ragnarok sets up Thor in space in Infinity War below, plus learn how Marvel is able to use the Skrulls in Captain Marvel.
