Incredibles 2 Scene Bob Finding Out About Jack Jack's Powers

The Incredibles 2 took the stage at D23 Expo.

The first scene from The Incredibles 2 was shown during the Disney Animation panel at D23 Expo 2017.

Presented by Brad Bird, the sequence depicted the long-anticipated scene when Bob (Craig T. Nelson) discovers that his baby son Jack Jack has super powers like the rest of the family. According to Bird, this is an idea that they've been ruminating on since the first Incredibles when character designer Teddy Newton brought it to the film's team.

The premise of the concept is that Bob falls asleep with Jack Jack while watching TV, and Jack Jack notices something outside that pulls his attention. In the work-in-progress clip shows, Jack Jack is watching a program on TV where a robber is stealing from a business, and he notices through their sliding glass door that a raccoon is stealing from their trash can outside. Drawing the connection between the robber's face mask and the raccoon's similar face markings, he starts making angry baby noises at the thieving rodent.

Audiences have known that Jack Jack has superpowers since the end of The Incredibles, which was released in 2004, but with this sequel taking place in the immediate aftermath of that film, the rest of the Parr family is still in the dark. "We’re having fun with that idea in this film," said writer/director Bird.

This scene definitely shows the sort of fun they're having. Jack Jack tries to confront the raccoon through the glass, but his powers allow him to crawl through it. He uses his powers to pull a half-eaten chicken drumstick away from the rodent, then lifts up the trash can lid with his mind, hurls it at the critter and then places it back on the trash can. He and the raccoon continue to fight, smacking one another and Jack Jack using his range of abilities as they roll around outside the Parr's new home. (You'll remember that their old house was destroyed at the end of The Incredibles, so the family is now living at what Bird describes as a "cross between a dream house and almost like a super lair, secret agents hideout.")

Finally, after Jack Jack uses his laser eyes, elastic abilities and other powers, the ruckus finally wakes up Bob. The Parr patriarch comes outside and tries to stop Jack Jack, but his baby son multiplies into multiple versions of himself in Bob's arms and goes after the raccoon agai. At long last, Bob can finally pull Jack Jack back, and the raccoon safely escapes. ("Don't worry," Pixar's John Lasseter said after the clip, "the raccoon is just fine.")

"You... have... powers!" Bob exclaims in delight in the clip. “You can multiply like rabbits and go right through every solid… oh, my, god," he continues, the severity of the situation dawning on him. Off screen, a phone rings, and the screen cut to black.

"What separates The Incredibles from other superhero films is that it’s fundamentally a story about family, but they’re superheroes," Bird told the D23 Expo audience. "With this new film, we’re excited to jump back into that world."
