Ghostbusters Producer Talks Potential New Live-Action Film

The Ghostbusters director discusses the potential for a new animated and live-action film.

While reports suggest the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot lost Sony money at the box office, but, according to producer Ivan Reitman, there are still new films in the franchise in the works.

While at San Diego Comic-Con, Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters films and produced the reboot, discussed the franchise's future on a Ghostbusters panel. According to Den of Geek, Reitman said "I think we have wonderful plans, both for an animated feature that we’re deep in design on already and a really great story...And of course a new live-action film."

Though previous reports suggested a sequel to the 2016 Ghostbusters film was likely dead, Reitman's comments suggest otherwise. And while no official plans have been announced, President of Worldwide Distribution at Sony Rory Bruer said shortly after the film's release that a sequel would happen.

An animated Ghostbusters film has previously been reported to be in the works. According to Den of Geek, Reitman said the film heavily features the Ghost World, looking at both this universe and specifically the Ghostbusters from a ghost point-of-view.

According to Reitman, he believes Sony Pictures will aim to "tie one of those films close to" the series' 35th anniversary in 2019.

IGN has reached out to Sony regarding both projects and will update this story should they respond.

There are currently no announced plans for a Ghostbusters film to be released in 2019. Last July, Sony Pictures Animation announced a new animated TV series based on the popular film franchise called Ghostbusters: Ecto Force.
