Fox will reportedly reevaluate the future of the Alien franchise following Covenant's showing at the box office.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, while director Ridley Scott had plans for two more Alien sequels after Covenant, this will be reassessed due to Covenant's $232 million worldwide gross.
The film debuted to an estimated $36 million in its opening weekend domestically, which was lower than Prometheus' $51.1 million opening in 2012. Despite performing below some prior expectations, Covenant still had one of the Alien franchise's strongest debuts, unadjusted for inflation.
However, Covenant ended up suffering a severe 71 percent drop in its second weekend at the box office.
Earlier this year, Scott revealed he wants to make four more Alien movies. Speaking to IGN in May, the director said he's already writing the script for the next sequel and plans to begin filming by 2018. A few days later, however, Scott slightly went back on his words, saying he'll maybe make "two more [films], or maybe one more, I don't know."
