Since the Season 7 finale of The Walking Dead we’ve heard a lot of talk from the camp behind the zombie thriller about the intensity of the upcoming season. At Comic-Con, we got our first look at what lies ahead for the series and it seems to deliver on the promise of war between the communities and all the skull-splitting moments fans have been waiting for.
While the action-packed trailer was full of the usual gore, guns, and the foul-mouthed villain fans have grown accustomed to, there were plenty of notable moments that may inspire some questions. We’re going to breakdown the biggest moments from The Walking Dead’s Comic-Con 2017 trailer.
Be forewarned: potential spoilers for the show and comic lie ahead.
Now, while there were several impactful moments, let’s jump right into what you’re probably all here for.
After the roaring music and gunfire of the climax leading into the title, we catch a dreamy sequence that shows a wooden cane leaning against a wall, and a saintly looking Rick, lying in bed with a fresh short hairstyle and a great big, bushy beard.
To comic fans, this may look fairly familiar, as the current comic incarnation of the duty-sworn sheriff walks with a cane and has a notably longer set of chin whiskers. This new look seems to allude to the TV series taking a page (or rather an absence of pages) from the source material.
You see, Robert Kirkman’s ink zombie epic reveals the new look after a 2 year jump immediately following the “All Out War” sequence the show is currently entering.
However, this imagery also may feel familiar to show-exclusive fans as well. It’s a bit similar to Rick’s wake up in the first episode of Season 1. It’s here that Rick discovered a whole new world, now overtaken by zombies. This also occurred after a time jump in which the world as he (and the audience) knew it had changed significantly.
Rick then became the audience’s guide to discovering this new reality and we think the scene involving the older Rick may be AMC’s way of allowing Rick to show us his new world all over again. The time jump is certainly a comic choice that the show will have to face in some way, and the previous Walking Dead trailers tend to cover only the 8 episode arc before the midseason break. Would the show be bold enough to take a 2 year jump in time at the break, meeting a returning audience with a new world order, as well as a seemingly changed main character? We certainly hope so.
But those aren’t all the notable images from the trailer.
The season finale showed us that King Ezekiel can only accept so much from The Saviors before he unites his people in defense of their home and honor. It’s nice to get a more visceral and active look at his majesty leading his subjects (and awesome pet tiger) into battle against Negan’s army. “Trust the King.”
Maggie is really beginning to fill out her comic shoes and we see her step up to lead the people of Hilltop by giving a Braveheart-esque motivational speech, despite Geoffrey’s growing hatred of her constant challenges to both his authority and way of life. Confrontation between the two seems imminent and Maggie has only been hardened by her experiences. We don’t see this turning out well for Hilltop’s current leader. After all, Maggie’s speech ends, “The future is ours. The world is ours.”
We were shocked to see Morgan and Jesus seemingly coming to blows. These martial arts aces could potentially do some serious damage to each other and in-fighting in the ranks is not what Rick needs right now. Let’s hope this clip is just the two melee masters sparring only to hone their skills.
We see that Negan’s regretful choice of lieutenant, Dwight, gets a note that says, “Tomorrow,” seemingly signaling Rick’s attack. After appearing to switch sides in Season 7, we’ll see if Dwight follows the same path his character took in the comics, playing a large role in Negan’s fate.
Lastly, Aaron says, “We pin them in and it takes care of itself. That’s the plan.” The comics saw Rick’s forces take a page from The Governor’s playbook and penetrate the gates to The Savior’s compound with a vehicle and let in a herd of the dead as Rick’s crew hoped to let the dead starve Negan’s crew into death or submission.
Also, Daryl blows a lot of stuff up in this trailer. It’s awesome.
Those are our takes on some of the biggest moments from AMC’s Season 8 trailer for The Walking Dead. You can see how it all plays out with the series’ 100th episode on October 22 on AMC.
