Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk debuted at the top of the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $50.5 million. Surpassing the debut of Nolan's last film, Interstellar, Dunkirk is one of the director's strongest debuts ever, but how exactly does it compare to the rest of his filmography?
Take a look at the chart below to see how Dunkirk's opening weekend stacks up to the debuts of Nolan's three Batman films, which the director is remastering in 4K, as well as all of his original movies, including Inception, Memento, and more. Numbers via Box Office Mojo.

Unadjusted for inflation, Dunkirk delivered Nolan's fourth-highest opening box office weekend, and the second-highest of his non-Batman films. Of course, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises represent massive jumps in box office openings from the rest of Nolan's movies, both having opened to more than $150 million, unadjusted for inflation. (Adjusted for inflation, The Dark Knight actually overtakes Rises to be Nolan's highest debut.)
Only Inception represents a higher opening for Nolan's original films over Dunkirk, both adjusted and unadjusted for inflation. However, Inception is Nolan's best-performing original film worldwide, having made $150 million more around the world than Interstellar. And while Dunkirk did perform better in its domestic opening weekend than Batman Begins unadjusted, Nolan's first film about the caped crusader did have a higher debut when accounting for inflation.
The weekend also marked a new high point for Wonder Woman's box office success. After the Gal Gadot-starring superhero film became the highest-grossing DC Universe film domestically, it has now overtaken Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to become the highest-grossing movie domestically of the summer 2017 movie season.
And considering Wonder Woman pulled in an estimated $4.6 million this weekend versus Guardians' $357,000, the two are unlikely to swap that title again. Wonder Woman is now the second-highest grossing film domestically of the year, only surpassed by the year's worldwide highest-grossing movie Beauty and the Beast. (Worldwide, Guardians is ahead of Wonder Woman by about $90 million.)
