“I hate you, Son Goku!”
Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.
The Saiyans from Universe 6 and 7 made quite the enjoyable ruckus this week as they met up and clashed within the Tournament of Power. Kale’s uncontrollable transformation was just as rewarding as I could have hoped and served as a great motivator to get Jiren to join in the action. The hot-button issue of power levels was at the forefront in Episode 100, and did stick out like a sore thumb in an otherwise fun episode.
Universe 6 and 7’s clash was one of the most enjoyable moments of the tournament thus far. From Cabba’s respectful challenge to Vegeta, to Caulifla’s overconfident attacks on Goku, it was great to see the Saiyans from both universes clashing in their own unique ways. The way Goku instructed Caulifla during the fight was also a nice touch as it both leans into Goku’s nature to try and help people learn and grow, but also served to showcase his own growth as we see him correct Caulifla on mistakes he and his allies have made over the years.
Kale’s transformation was a spectacle to behold. Using jealousy to fuel Kale’s anger and spur on the transformation was a unique way to get things started, and her almost ritualistic chanting of ‘Son Goku’ was a perfect tie into Brolly and his constant utterance of “Kakarot.” It was also quite exciting to see Goku getting absolutely demolished by her, and I couldn’t help but laugh as Kale easily threw Goku around, smashing him around on the floor like it was nothing. It was a shame the fight only lasted a few minutes, but at least things were closed off with Jiren, letting us see just how powerful he could be and give us a glimpse of what we can expect from him.
All this fighting between Saiyans did raise an issue that is ever present in Dragon Ball: just how powerful is everyone? From the early days of Dragon Ball Z, power levels have wildly varied and been undefined. This is for good reason, but also leads to issues such as the one we saw this week. Caulifla’s rapid ascension through the levels of Super Saiyan makes the struggle our heroes endured in the past seem silly by comparison.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened either, as both Kid Trunks and Goten are guilty of receiving ‘free’ power ups so that they could compete on the same level as the other Saiyans in past episodes. This issue isn’t an easy one to solve as there will always be a need for strong fighters. In the future I hope we see a little more development on characters that showcase their own struggles of growth before they can so easily match or surpass the heroes we enjoy watching.
The Verdict
Episode 100 brings with it a fantastic clash of power as the Saiyans from Universe 6 and 7 finally begin battling. Kale’s wild transformation into a crazed warrior was handled extremely well, showcasing her immense power and uncontrollable rage while being different enough from Brolly to make her unique. Caulifla’s ease of Super Saiyan mastery did bring to light an issue of handing out free power upgrades, but wasn’t so grievous as to ruin the fun of her battling with Goku.
