DC held a panel at SDCC this evening focused on Gerard Way's Young Animal imprint. During the panel, Way and his fellow writers revealed that the Young Animal characters will be crossing paths with the Justice League in early 2018.
This announcement is a case of good news/bad news for Young Animal fans. The bad news is that three of of the four ongoing series - Shade: The Changing Girl, Mother Panic and Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye - will be going on hiatus between October 2017 and January 2018. The good news is that DC will be publishing a series of four Young Animal/DCU crossover specials beginning in January.
The first of these specials was revealed to be Doom Patrol/Justice League, which pairs the new Doom Patrol with the Justice League for the first time. The book will be co-written by Way and Steve Orlando (Justice League of America), with Aco (Midnighter & Apollo) providing the art. All-Star Superman artist Frank Quitely drew the cover for this issue, which features a brand-new and very bizarre hero named Milkman Man.
Way noted that these crossover specials will make the relationship between the Young Animal characters and the rest of the DCU more clear. There have been references to various DC heroes in these books already, including Cave Carson reminiscing about his Superman team-up and Mother Panic frequently voicing her disgust towards Batman, but it's never been clear whether these books take place in current DC Rebirth continuity.
We discussed the relationship between DC Rebirth and Young Animal in an interview with Cave Carson co-writer Jon Rivera earlier this year. Rivera told us, "It gets a little ambiguous. I know Gerard has kind of talked about Young Animal's place in the DCU, and we do take place in DC, but it's a little fuzzy. We're on the outskirts of it."
DC put out a press release after the panel which hints at big changes to come for the entire Young Animal imprint after these crossovers, saying "These annuals will mark the conclusion of the first phase of the imprint and will send each series in surprising new directions!"
Look for Doom Patrol/Justice League #1 to hit stores in January 2018.
