Boruto Episode 14 Review

Ghosts in the past.

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

The journey felt much longer than 14 episodes, but Boruto has finally found its way to the end of the Ghost Incidents arc. Although it has been an uneven few months since the show’s premiere, it manages to end on a relatively high note, featuring engaging combat scenes and even a (seemingly) happy ending for the wayward Sumire.

Following the events of the previous episode, Boruto and Mitsuki have been pulled into an alternate dimension by Sumire and her fearsome Demon Beast Nue. Thanks to his Dojutsu, Boruto is able to quickly identify Nue’s weak point and bring him down, but still hesitates in the face of Sumire. Boruto stops Mitsuki from killing her once again, instead opting to talk her down from her plan to sacrifice herself for her father’s revenge. The whole scenario feels a little too similar to the encounter from the previous episode, but seeing Sumire break free from her curse and tame Nue is a relief, and seeing Sai extend his help to her at the episode’s end gives this plotline some satisfying finality.

The story wraps up nicely, but I must admit I had some lingering confusion about the events that unfolded as a result of the Gozu Tennou. How were they pulled into an alternate dimension? Why was the Gozu Tennou broken so easily? Why did the alternate dimension collapse? How does Nue survive without the Gozu Tennou? Maybe these details were never meant to be looked at closely, but it all feels a little too convenient to let slide especially in a series like Naruto that is usually so committed to explaining itself.

The preceding combat scenes (especially the one between Mitsuki and Simure) continue to uphold the high quality the Naruto series is known for, albeit in short spurts. The animation in these scenes is also of a much higher quality, making the dip in quality once the talking resumes even more jarring (weird eyes continue to be an issue). This is a minor complaint, but as someone who preferred the Naruto anime over the manga because of the great animation, I hope it improves as the show goes on.

More important is the overall message: that children need not follow the same path as their parents. This lesson is delivered in a slightly strange way (Nue refusing to kill his “mother”, Sumire) but it is a good mission statement for the show, which has often reduced its new cast to copies of their parents. Hopefully this moment serves as a turning point for those characters and we see more original stories from them in the future.

So, what’s next for Boruto? The end of the episode hints that maybe this isn’t the end of Sumire’s struggles but at least the Ghost Incidents have finally been resolved. I would like to see the show pursue the story behind The Foundation more deeply, but for now I’m just happy we can put the current act to rest.

The Verdict

The Ghost Incidents have been resolved, and Sumire lives on thanks to Boruto’s tender heart. Mitsuki dazzles with another flashy fight, but the following resolution leaves me with a number of unanswered questions. However, I’m willing to let it slide as long as the show can make good on Boruto’s message of hope: that children can strike a different path from their parents.
