At D23 Fan Expo, Marvel Studios revealed five statues to give us our first look at the Black Order, Thanos’ group of super-powered cronies that will debut in Avengers: Infinity War.
The alien squad will be backing up their evil master as he quests to gather the Infinity Stones, so check out our photos of the statues by clicking through the slideshow gallery below and then read on for what we know about them from the comics.
The Black Order debuted in 2013’s New Avengers #8 as part of Marvel Comics’ Infinity event storyline and were created by Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opeña, and Jim Cheung. Infinity told the dual-storyline of the Avengers fighting off an alien armada in space and stopping Thanos from collecting the Infinity Gems (or Infinity Stones, as they’re known in the movies) on Earth.
The Black Order (sometimes referred to as the Cull Obsidian) were key players in Thanos’ multi-pronged attack on Earth’s defenses.
Here’s the lineup of Thanos’ formidable generals.
Corvus Glaive is most certainly Thanos’ favorite member of the group thanks to his merciless attitude and staunch loyalty. He has used his skills as a master strategist to command Thanos’ armies to overthrow and destroy worlds. His special weapon is an otherworldly spear that can slice through anything like a lightsaber and, more importantly, hold onto his essence so he can regenerate from it should he be destroyed in combat.
This muscular fellow is incredibly strong and has an impenetrable armored hide. When Thanos invaded the technologically advanced city of Wakanda, Black Dwarf was sent in first like a battering ram at the head of his army. He’s the brother of Corvus Glaive.
While the other members are all about brute force and pointy weapons, Ebony Maw is a master manipulator who lurks in the shadows. He has super-persuasion powers that let him corrupt and control the minds of others, even a mind as powerful as Doctor Strange. With a personal teleportation device, he can come and go like the wind, pulling strings all over the galaxy to execute his schemes. He’s not unlike Loki in that he’s always spinning plans upon plans, so you’re never quite sure if he’s serving his master Thanos or working to put himself in a position of power.
The names of the Black Order members all sound like awesome heavy metal bands, but you have to admit that Proxima Midnight takes the cake. The wife of Corvus Glaive, she’s the greatest warrior among the group and utilizes a super-powered lance that contains the power of a sun. She can turn the lance into lethal beams of light and generate a net that held down the Hulk with the weight of a star. Proxima is so powerful that just Corvus and she were able to take on an entire team of Avengers that included Captain America, Captain Marvel and the Superman analogue Hyperion.
If you’ve ever wondered how Thanos always seems to know everything, the psychotic Supergiant is the answer. She’s a mental parasite that feeds on people’s intelligence, thoughts, and memories like a vampire, and she instantly shares that information with Thanos through a mental link they share. Most dangerous of all, she can take control of people’s minds and make them do her bidding, like when she took over Iceman and forced him to attack his fellow X-Men.
