The Dark Multiverse is coming to the DC Universe, and Batman is the one who opened the door that may doom the Earth.
At the DC Dark Nights: Metal and Dark Matter panel at SDCC today, DC revealed the designs for six of the seven evil Batmen who will debut in a series of one-shots starting in November. As explained by Scott Snyder, the Dark multiverse is fluid and always changing. These Batmen are essentially nightmare what if scenarios for Bruce Wayne that incorporate aspects of other DC heroes and at least one villain. Without any further ado, behold The Murder Machine, The Red Death, The Devastator, The Merciless, The Drowned, and The Dawnbreaker.
Missing in action is the Batman Who Laughs, who is clearly a mix of the Joker and Batman. Snyder and Greg Capullo mentioned that they are specifically holding back on that reveal, but they said that they are very proud of it. Check out our interview with Snyder for more on the Batman Who Laughs.
Also during the panel, Snyder revealed that Batman’s newest partner, Duke Thomas, is getting his own ongoing series. Dubbed Batman: The Signal, this new series will be written by Tony Patrick, one of Snyder’s graduates of the DC Talent Workshop. As revealed in Dark Days: The Casting this month, "The Signal" is Duke’s new superhero name. Snyder noted that Signal’s ability to be Gotham’s "hero by day” will allow them to explore different aspects of the city’s mythology.
Dan DiDio also seemed excited to reveal that Animal Man writer Jeff Lemire is returning to DC with a new series called The Terrifics, which is also spinning out of Dark Nights: Metal. Lemire will be joined by artist Ivan Reis, and the team includes Mr. Terrific, Plastic Man, Phantom Girl, Metamorpho and others. Didio likened the new team to the Fantastic Four and said that they will be a “family.” A fan in the audience noted that Plastic Man’s costume resembled the outfit worn by his son, Offspring. Lemire appeared to indicate that it was not an accident.
Additionally, Lemire revealed that he is also writing a Hawkman one-shot spinning out of Metal called Hawkman Found. Lemire will be joined by artists Bryan Hitch and Kevin Nowlan for that special, which will pave the way for Hawkman’s return to the DCU. It is scheduled to be released in December.
