A Deep Dive Into the Kingdom Hearts 3 D23 Expo Trailer

Hammer time.

The latest Kingdom Hearts 3 D23 Expo trailer gave us a brand new world — Pixar’s finally joined the Kingdom Hearts family! — and a release year, but there are also plenty of new combat details. So as the trailer itself says, let’s dive right in.

Watch the video above to follow along with our deep dive into the newest Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer, or read on for more information on what the D23 Expo look showcased.

The trailer lends further credence to the idea that Keyblades no longer seemingly need to be won at the end of saving a world. Sora’s Keyblade instantly takes on its Toy Story form as he arrives in Andy’s room. It has an alien keychain, a Buzz Lightyear-themed hilt, and a Woody-centric blade.

Sora, Donald, and Goofy, all in action-figure form, jump into battle in Andy’s room, with some fun nods to the original Toy Story films, as the toys seek to escape and find their lost friends by exiting out the window of Andy's room. But the big teases come when the gang takes the action outside. The Kingdom Hearts 3 Orchestra trailer indicated players no longer need to swap out party members, as Goofy, Donald, and Hercules all fought alongside Sora. Now, it seems like there may be no limit, as both Woody and Buzz have joined Sora’s party, as well. Whether or not there is a party cap, the tease certainly sets the stage for all seven Guardians of Light, including Sora, fighting together at some point in the sequel.

Also, you’ll notice Sora pulls off the same skydiving move he first did in the Orchestra trailer twice, implying this isn’t a move tied to certain scenarios but rather contextual to combat. It’s also an indication that Kingdom Hearts III has some big worlds, and not just for when Sora is toy-sized.

Combat on the ground also reveals what appears to be Sora’s Power Form first teased in a censored image from last year. The form command is titled Hyper Hammer and transforms Sora’s Keyblade into a hammer. This form has some pretty brutal area of effect attacks, though none with lasting damage to the environment.

This power form eventually gives way to the Drill Punch, previously teased at the end of the Orchestra trailer. This form varies up combat even further, as Sora can drill in and out of the ground to quickly traverse the world during combat — it might be a temporary replacement for dodging. And its ultimate attack echoes The Claw Toy Story’s aliens revered in the first Pixar film.

This power Form gets the main spotlight in the trailer, though new footage from previously revealed worlds shows off the Double Arrowguns and Magic Launcher Keyblade transformations, as well.

The other major addition to combat comes in Galaxy Toys, as Sora, via a command, is able to ride the Giga robotic toys fighting alongside the Heartless. The switch to first-person mirrors the player’s UI for Sora in the world of the game, including the ability to eject Titanfall-style out of the Gigas mid-combat. Whether or not this mech combat is tied specifically to the Toy Story world is unclear, though it may indicate that world-specific gameplay mechanics may be introduced throughout the sequel.

But Galaxy Toys isn’t just home to some new combat opportunities, it’s also where Sora faces off with another of Xehanort’s forms. He battles Young Xehanort, first glimpsed in the prequel Birth by Sleep and then later in Dream Drop Distance. This comes after Xemans confronted Sora on the outskirts of Twilight Town in the last trailer.

Xehanort claims they are missing “a darkness,” and that something in the Toy Story realm offers more evidence in the True Organization’s search and efforts to become whole.

But just what Toy Story can offer remains a mystery — but we finally know when we might get some solutions. The trailer ends in the reveal that Kingdom Hearts III, first officially revealed in 2013, will be released in 2018, 13 years after Kingdom Hearts 2 debuted.
