Splatoon 2 offers a lot of variety in its many multiplayer experiences, but do you know everything there is to know? Veterans may know the lay of the land pretty well, but that may not include some of the changes the sequel introduced. Here are few things Splatoon 2 doesn't tell you.
The game will tell you this quick tip that many will likely gloss over. This one you'll learn pretty quick, but it may throw returning players off guard. Now that the GamePad is no more, the map showing the stage is assigned to a button, specifically the X button. Players from the original game knew the X button as the jump button, so don't be surprised to accidentally blow the map up onto the screen when you're trying to make simple jump. Use B for jump!
Just because you've got the map displayed on your screen doesn't mean the game comes to a halt. Whenever you open the map, you're still able to continue moving. This is helpful when you're swimming in a straight line and you want to take a quick peek!
Whether you're all alone in a lobby or stuck waiting over a minute for that last player, getting trapped in the multiplayer lobby can be a drag - but it doesn't have to be. If nobody else appears to be joining or you don't want to wait to go back and change gear - you can force the lobby to disconnect by either browsing the home menu for a bit, or quickly press the power button to go into sleep mode for a moment then come back. The quick outage in your internet will boot you from the room - and if the match hasn't started, you won't get scolded for it. This is incredibly useful if you find yourself alone in a Salmon Run lobby and don't want to go it alone (since it's super tough going solo).

New players may not know that when performing a Super Jump using the map to a teammate's location - both teams can see an indicator on the ground with an arrow where you will land. As the arrow's color drains, the person jumping will finish landing, so use this knowledge to your advantage when ambushing enemy reinforcements - or make sure you only jump to a player that's not under attack. However, getting the Stealth Jump gear bonus allows you leave no indication of where you will land.
This also goes for players using the Inkjet special weapon - as they will return to the place they started using the special weapon when it eventually breaks, and the marker will indicate to both teams where that is.
When waiting in a lobby for a room to fill up, you might noticed the big icon below your level that has your weapon and a meter - it's your Freshness Rating. The more you fight and win, the more your freshness rating will increase. If you happen to win a battle and your rating increases to the next level, you'll gain a huge rank-up bonus with more points that go towards leveling up yourself and your gear!
When trying out Salmon Run in local co-op in The Shoal, you'll be able to set the difficulty of the map, and retry if you fail. While every match is different thanks to random factors, if you retry a map you've failed, the run will play out exactly the same, letting you get better at dealing with the specific enemies or events you were up against. Only by quitting and trying again will you initiate new random factors, Boss Salmonids, and events.
Crusty Sean has a foodtruck that sells food that can increase experience or money earned - but he only trades them for specific tickets. You can find these tickets by gaining bonuses in Salmon Run, but you can also find several of each hiding in many Single Player Missions. There are certain maps like the Inkblot Art Academy where players cannot reach the enemy spawn point and home turf - however some maps, like Sturgeon Shipyard, let you ink as far up as the spawning platform itself. A lot of times, players can be so focused on getting back into battle that they neglect to take a look at their home turf - which means a clever player can infiltrate and ink their home base to tip the scales before the other team realizes whats up. Similarly, you should always be checking the map when you can to make sure your spawn point is always inked in your color.
