San Diego Comic-Con is upon us once again, with the annual geek-fest taking place from July 20 to July 23 (with Preview Night on July 19). IGN will of course be there in full force, covering all of your favorite comics, movies, TV, games and nerdtacular topics with news, trailers, footage reactions, interviews, and much more. We'll also be teaming with Twitter for our “IGN Live From SDCC” livestream, so be sure to check that out during the show!
But first, let's take a look at some of our most anticipated panels, installations and events that are taking place at SDCC this year. Read on for the biggest things we can't wait to see at Comic-Con 2017!
The DC Extended Universe
Saturday, July 22, 11:30am-1:30pm, Hall H
Warner Bros. will bring Justice League and Aquaman to this year's SDCC. This isn't Justice League's first time at SDCC, having swooped in last year with its first trailer, but this is the film's last chance at making a big splash with fans before its release in November. Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher will all be there to promote the DC film. Aquaman, meanwhile, is still filming in Australia so SDCC will be the first time fans see any footage from the James Wan-directed superhero film. While we know Momoa will already be on hand, might we also see his co-stars Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Patrick Wilson take the stage?
Marvel Studios
Saturday, July 22, 5:30pm-7:00pm, Hall H
Marvel once again closes out the most-hyped day in Hall H, the biggest venue at SDCC. The studio is confirmed to show fans new footage from their next two releases -- November's Thor: Ragnarok and February's Black Panther -- as well as a sneak peek at the now-filming Avengers: Infinity War, which opens May 2018. It also seems like a safe bet that Infinity War's super-cast (the Avengers, Guardians, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange) will all take the stage for the mother of all photo opps. We also expect Marvel to tout their next two movies gearing up for production: 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp and 2019's Captain Marvel.
Netflix's Death Note and Bright
Thursday, July 20, 3:15pm-4:30pm, Hall H
The streaming giant will offer attendees exclusive sneak peeks at two of their upcoming feature films. First, there's Suicide Squad director David Ayer’s action-thriller Bright. Set in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been co-existing since the beginning of time, stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, and Edgar Ramirez will join Ayer in presenting never-before-seen footage. Netflix will also give SDCC attendees an exclusive sneak peek at Death Note, their live-action adaptation of the acclaimed manga. We expect Death Note director Adam Wingard and his cast to take the stage to tout the film.
Blade Runner 2049 and Ready Player One
Saturday, July 22, 11:30am-1:30pm, Hall H
The heroes of the DC universe aren't the only properties Warner Bros. is bringing to its big Hall H panel on Saturday. Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to the sci-fi classic, will be on hand with Rick Deckard himself, Harrison Ford, and Ryan Gosling taking the stage. Co-stars Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Lennie James and Mackenzie Davis will also be in attendance along with writers Hampton Fancher and Michael Green and director Denis Villeneuve. (We're assuming it will be the human versions of those folks and not the Replicants.) Additionally, the Blade Runner 2049 Experience will be open to the public in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, replicating (heh) the setting of the film's dystopian future with an art gallery, an Oculus VR experience, a neon-lit Los Angeles street scene, and more.
Legendary director Steven Spielberg will also be previewing Ready Player One during the Warners Hall H panel. Stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, and T.J. Miller, and author/co-screenwriter Ernest Cline and co-screenwriter Zak Penn will join Spielberg to discuss the sci-fi project. Spielberg hasn't been to Comic-Con since 2011 when he was promoting The Adventures of Tintin, so this will be a treat.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle and 20th Century Fox
Thursday, July 20, 11:00am-12:00pm, Hall H
20th Century Fox is being very quiet about what they're bringing to Hall H this year, and this comes after they sat the convention out last year due to piracy concerns. But they will be back for an hour slot on Thursday this time around, and we can at least guess at what they have in store for us. The Matthew Vaughn spy sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle hits theaters in September, so it's a no-brainer for Fox to show off the continued adventures of Taron Egerton's Eggsy. Beyond that, you gotta figure there will be some kind of X-Men presence, with Deadpool 2, The New Mutants, and Dark Phoenix all coming in 2018 and in various stages of production right now. Who knows, maybe we'll even get some news on that long-developing Gambit movie! (Channing Tatum did take the Hall H stage two years ago with the rest of the X-Men cast.)
Stranger Things
Saturday, July 22, 3:00pm, Hall H
Netflix is still a relative newcomer to San Diego Comic Con, with last summer’s Luke Cage panel notable as the streaming juggernaut’s first foray into SDCC. This year, Saturday’s Stranger Things gathering is among the first non-Marvel panels for the company at SDCC, as the cast and creators will sit for an in-depth discussion on the new, stranger follow-up adventure to last year’s break-out series, which will include never-before-seen footage of what's to come in Season 2 this October.
Also part of Netflix’s participation, along with panels for Marvel’s The Defenders, and movies Bright and Death Note, is The Netflix Experience at the Hilton Gaslamp, where you’ll be able to visit the virtual [reality] Upside Down with Stranger Things, get immersed into the world of Bright, and dive into the streets of New York with Marvel’s The Defenders.
Marvel’s The Defenders
Friday, July 21, 5:15pm, Hall H
Continuing on the Netflix side of things, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist — along with executive producer Jeph Loeb and other surprise guests — will take the stage together at San Diego Comic-Con, just weeks out from their big series debut on Netflix to answer questions and show some exclusive new footage before the eight-episode adventure lands on August 18th.
This isn’t the only Marvel TV panel of course, as there’s also Inhumans, the new Marvel’s Spider-Man animated series, and the notable Marvel/Fox collaborations -- FX’s Legion, and FOX’s upcoming The Gifted -- all making big moves at Comic-Con, but The Defenders stands out because of the awesome team-up factor, after all four heroes had their own solo series to introduce them and their supporting casts, many of whom also will appear in this series. Plus, The Defenders is also part of the aforementioned Netflix Experience at the Hilton Gaslamp.
Game of Thrones
Friday, July 21, 1:30pm - 2:30pm, Hall H
Westeros takes over Hall H once again as the producers of HBO’s Game of Thrones, along with cast members Sophie Turner, Alfie Allen, Gwendoline Christie, Jacob Anderson, Liam Cunningham, Nathalie Emmanuel, Conleth Hill, John Bradley, and Isaac Hempstead Wright, sit for an epic Q&A panel that actually takes place… while the season is airing! That’s right, for the first time, due to Thrones debuting mid-summer, the show’s SDCC appearance will coincide with current episodes, so they may even show us a sneak peek of what’s right around the corner (you know, if they’re in a giving mood).
There’s also the Game of Thrones: Winter is Here Experience, across from the Omni Hotel, where fans will journey through Winterfell, Dragonstone, King’s Landing and North of the Wall, while getting cool Night King swag!
Westworld
Saturday, July 22, 4:15pm - 5:15pm, Hall H
Westworld’s first time at San Diego Comic Con (though it did make a splash back at NYCC) means a big Hall H welcome on Saturday as creators/executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and stars Ben Barnes, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ed Harris, Luke Hemsworth, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Simon Quarterman, Rodrigo Santoro, Angela Sarafyan, Jimmi Simpson, Tessa Thompson, Evan Rachel Wood, Shannon Woodward, and Jeffrey Wright sit down to chat about the superb, labyrinthine artificial intelligence series - and possibly even offer up a few first looks at Season 2 (even though they are JUST going back into production for it).
Also, if you look at a few of the actors on the panel and where and when we last saw them on the series, you have to wonder… will the characters they play be returning? Or are they just there because a lot of the discussion will be about Season 1? And yes, there’s an off-site experience! Fans can check out the Westworld: Journey into Night Experience, where you can enter the world of the show, with hidden surprises, psychological secrets and perhaps even a visit to the Mariposa Saloon, complete with Dr. Ford’s Hosts in attendance to help fulfill guests’ every desire. (Location is still TBA)
Young Justice
Friday, July 21, 10am, Room 6BCF
Warner Bros. TV and DC are bringing a ton of shows to SDCC, including popular ongoing live-action fare like Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, and new shows like Black Lightning and Krypton, but the return of the fan-favorite animated series Young Justice is particularly exciting. Series producers Greg Weisman, Brandon Vietti and key members of the creative team (including art director Phil Bourassa) will be on hand to answer questions about Young Justice and its rather miraculous resurrection and hopefully offer up some exclusive looks at the highly anticipated third season, titled Young Justice: Outsiders.
Worth noting is that Young Justice: Outsiders will be one of the first shows for DC’s own streaming service debuting in 2018, along with a new live-action Titans series.
