On the heels of the news that Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miler were off the Star Wars spinoff mere weeks away from the completion of principal photography, three names have reportedly surfaced as possible 11th hour replacements. And all three filmmakers are past colleagues of Lucasfilm.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winner Ron Howard is a contender to step in to helm. Howard directed Willow, based on a story by George Lucas, for Lucasfilm back in 1988. Howard was also once in the mix for helming The Phantom Menace, but he has said that he was never even formally offered a script for that film.
Another contender is said to be Joe Johnston, who worked at Liucasfilm in a visual effects capacity on the original Star Wars trilogy before going on to direct Jurassic Park III (produced by now-Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy), The Rocketeer, and Captain America: The First Avenger.
Finally, THR also mentions Han Solo screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who is also a director, as a possible replacement, but such a "move could be complicated by DGA [Directors Guild of America] rules preventing someone already working on a film taking over for a director that is being replaced except for a short-term emergency."
Kasdan is a Star Wars veteran, having previously worked on The Force Awakens, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.
THR adds: "It is expected that a new director will take the next several weeks, with the production shut down, to go over what Lord and Miller have shot, re-edit what they’ve filmed and go from there."
