Slime making kits are an odd but seemingly essential part of childhood culture. Disgusting, almost otherworldly, and compelling, slime is easy to make and fun to mess around with. Whether you want your slime made with Borax or Borax-free, want oozy slime or fluffy slime, want to make it from a kit or take the DIY approach, we've got you covered with this collection of the best slime making kits available online. Of course, with slime once again gaining in popularity this year, you can also pop into your local Michaels, Target, or Walmart to get in on the trend.

These are the best slime making kits around:

Best Science-Themed Slime Kits

Science is an applied methodology for understanding the world around us, and while that seems like a lofty explanation it makes room for creating gross slimes to better understand chemistry. Here are some of the best science-themed slime kits.

Science Academy Slime Lab

Science Academy Slime Lab

This kit is more focused on the chemistry of slime creation, but that doesn't mean it isn't kind of gross. It's polymer science, so it includes a lab station and goggles, but you'll need to provide your own clipboard and lab coat if you want to really sell the scientist look.

Magic School Bus Diving into Slime Kit

Magic School Bus Diving into Slime Kit

You remember the Magic School Bus, right? It seems like magic and science should be at odds with one another, but Ms. Frizzle showed us it's possible to bend a few of the laws of science in the name of educating ourselves. This kit has tons of cool experiments in addition to slime creation, so it's extra awesome.

Disgusting Science Kit

Disgusting Science Kit

The disgusting science kit from Scientific Explorer lets you make your own snot, which is really gross, but it also has experiments for stinky feet, stinky intestines, and growing friendly molds and bacteria. How friendly? So friendly they might even send you a nice note for your birthday. Probably not, though.

Wild Science Weird Slime Laboratory

Wild Science Weird Slime Laboratory

Who wants tadpole soup? No one? Well too bad, because the Wild Science Weird Slime Laboratory lets you make some and it sounds so cool you'd be a fool not to cook some up. It's not actually tadpole soup and definitely shouldn't be eaten, but it's a cool way to learn about chemistry.

SmartLab Toys It's Alive Slime Lab

SmartLab Toys It's Alive Slime Lab

Of all the science-themed kits, this is the only one that includes a motorized slime machine. That alone is worth the investment, but there are 20 slime-filled experiments to be had, and it includes all kinds of monster-themed lab equipment to make your home look like Dr. Frankenstein's lab.

Slime Time Science Lab

Slime Time Science Lab

This cool little kit has everything you need to start making slime on your own time. It even includes guar gum as a slime ingredient, which sounds really metal but you're probably confusing it with heavy-metal gross-out band GWAR, which is also pretty great.

Glow in the Dark Slime Kits

Take science to the next level by adding a whole other dimension: a cool glow. These kits take the regular household slime and make them harder to lose at night, which is really nice of them to be honest.

Glow in the Dark Slime Science Kit

Here's a cool slimy science kit with glow in the dark properties. As if do it yourself slime wasn't already cool enough. This one has guides the manufacturer says were written by teachers, so there's bound to be something good and educational in there. Fun and educational? It's win-win.

Crazy Aaron Thinking Putty

Crazy Aaron Thinking Putty

This one is more of a putty kit than a slime kit, but putty is just really thick slime, right? The putty is pre-mixed so you add the colors or effects yourself and then beam with pride at you creation. Who doesn't like to feel a sense of accomplishment?

Cra-Z-Art Glitter Slime Kit

Cra-Z-Art Glitter Slime Kit

Slime Supplies

You can't just conjure slime from thin air, it requires some ingredients. Not all slime kits come with all the necessary ingredients, so check before you order to save yourself the heartache of a slime kit without the crucial slime catalyst. Here are some slime supplies. Slimpplies? Need to workshop that one.

12oz Slime Storage Jar

12oz Slime Storage Jar

Unless you want your slime to dry out (and you don't because then it isn't slime) you need to store it somewhere. This 12-pack of 12-ounce storage jars include caps and are advertised specifically for slime storage. But you could probably store other things in them, like buttons or other smaller jars.

Slime Glue

Slime Glue

This glue is specifically formulated for slime making. Can Elmer's say that? We're asking, because we honestly don't know. But since non-toxic glue is a big part of the slime making formula, this is a great choice, especially if you plan on making a bunch of slime. It also comes in gallon jugs, in case you want to make at least one gallon of slime for your gross-out horror film.

Do It Yourself Slime

You don't need to buy a kit to make slime; you can do it yourself with some common household ingredients. The benefit of the kit comes in detailed instructions, pre-measured ingredients, and tools and mixing accouterments. But if you really want to get down and dirty with the slime, you'll need these ingredients: borax, glue, and water.

Milliard Borax

Milliard Borax

Basically all the slime recipes, even in the kits, are based on and around the chemical actions of borax. Borax isn't to be trifled with, but it isn't volatile or as hazardous as something like lye. Still, don't go flinging this stuff around. Mix a teaspoon in a cup of water and in a separate bowl mix up some glue with some more water. When everything is nice and smooth, add the borax and water solution to the glue and water solution and BAM. Slime.
