The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago has upheld a federal judge's decision to overturn the murder conviction of Brendan Dassey, one of the subjects of Netflix's Making a Murderer documentary series.
As BBC reports, Dassey and his uncle, Steven Avery, were found guilty of the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. Following the trial in 2007, both men were sentenced to life in prison. However, Dassey's conviction was overturned last August on the grounds that his confession was coerced.
"We look forward to working to secure his release from prison as soon as possible," said Dassey's lawyers in a joint statement. "As of today's date, Brendan Dassey has lost 4,132 days of his life to prison."
With the overturned conviction upheld, Dassey could be released from prison within the next 90 days. However, for now, the 27-year-old will remain incarcerated pending the prosecution's decision to retry the case.
Last July, Netflix announced it was working on additional episodes of Making a Murderer. The new episodes will continue the stories of Avery and Dassey into the post-conviction process and its emotionally-charged consequences.
