iZombie: "Looking for Mr. Goodbrain" Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

A combination of Peak TV, Peak Me Traveling and CW not regularly making episodes of iZombie available to press early stopped me from being able to do weekly reviews this season, but I definitely wanted to jump back in to review the two-part season finale, which kicked off this week.

And man, “Looking for Mr. Goodbrain Part 1” sure had a lot going on! Katty is dead, and Chase may be the killer! Harley became a suicide bomber and took out Natalie and most of Major’s buddies!

The middle of the season got a bit messy as the Fillmore Graves storyline felt somewhat pushed to the side for awhile, and it was a clunky transition from Vivian to Chase as the leader at FG. I wish Chase could have been around all season to make this reveal even bigger (if it’s what it appears to be…), but certainly Jason Dohring is great at playing charming yet dangerous, as we saw a new, seductive side to Chase... and then learned he might be a killer.

Liv cheating on Justin is awful, even as it felt inevitable that one of the brains she eats might cause her to do something really hurtful at some point. The early scenes of Liv going to the bar Katty frequented, over and over, then stopping herself from hooking up with random men (as we learned Katty did all the time) were very well done – and deftly acted, per usual, but Rose McIver. And the fact that she wouldn’t resist the temptation as much with Chase also made sense, without needing to be articulated, as Liv would know that she didn’t need to worry about turning him into a zombie and have one less reason to fight her Katty-provided temporary urges.

I will say that Natalie dying felt super telegraphed, the second she asked Major to run off with her and he accepted. There was just a bit too much of a “Great girl offering a great life” feel for it to end in anything but doom. But I certainly didn’t expect her to die in the way she did, in such a huge, startling manner – that apparently also took out a ton of Fillmore Graves in one fell swoop!

It felt very odd that Chase didn’t question Major at all about being a human. Did he think he was always a human? If not, wouldn’t he want to know how he became one, since could have a major impact on Fillmore Graves? In fact, why didn't any of Major's friends ask the question too?

Meanwhile, Peyton being offered a new job by (zombie) Mayor Baracus felt like a strong new path to put her on – one that better integrates her into the zombie storylines on the show.

Before things took a darker turn with Liv on Katty brain, the moments of her seeing visions of when Katty slept with Ravi were hysterical thanks to how disgusted Liv was and how utterly amused Ravi was. The entire early interrogation scene was a comedy triumph, as Liv was grossed out, Ravi was having the time of his life, and Clive stood back in the corner, now deathly afraid of Aleutian flu and/or bio-terrorism. McIver, Rahul Kohli and Malcolm Goodwin perfectly played off each other here, in an example of the kind of moments iZombie does so well.

The Verdict

iZombie’s penultimate Season 3 episode raised the stakes considerably, as Liv tried to avoid being recognized from that newspaper cover (and Rose McIver got to look like herself again!), while threats went big both towards Fillmore Graves and from within it – leaving much of the group decimated by the end, and their current leader looking like a murderer. There was also a nice mixture of personal drama with the zombie plotlines in the mix, as Liv’s latest brain led her to do a very bad thing… with someone who might be a very bad zombie. Though why does no one at Fillmore Graves seem to care how Major became human again?
