Batman: Is Josh Gad Teasing a Role as the Penguin?

Beauty and the Beast actor Josh Gad has been posting some curious Batman-related imagery to his social media.

Gad tweeted a photo on June 1st of himself at DC Entertainment's offices holding a Batman cover featuring the Penguin and standing alongside DC Films co-bosses Geoff Johns and Jon Berg. Gad's caption: "Nothing to see here..."

IGN has reached out to Warner Bros. for further comment.

Gad's June 1st tweet wasn't the first time he's teased Penguin on his social media. Gad previously tweeted an image of Penguin on May 2nd without any context. When MTV later asked Gad about it, the actor laughed it off as, "Just having some fun." He added, "There's no there there. I promise you. ... Just putting some things out there."

However, Gad then said he "would absolutely be open to playing the Penguin in the Batman movie," although he admitted he'd never met the film's director, Matt Reeves. "There's nothing more we need to talk about," Gad laughed. "It's all ... we'll see. Putting it out in the ether."

Here's a little additional context on Gad's original Penguin tweet from May 2nd. I had interviewed Gad just a few hours before he tweeted that image. We were both passengers aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express as part of a promotional event for Gad's next movie, Murder on the Orient Express. (See my interview with him below.)

The press joined Gad that evening at a black tie dinner aboard the train. My initial reaction to Gad's first Penguin tweet was that the actor, who I saw wearing a tuxedo that night, was just having some fun posting a picture of a tuxedo-clad character. Gad's June 1st tweet is obviously a far different and more curious matter.

So are Josh Gad and DC just having some fun riling fans up? Probably. Or maybe they are indeed hinting at something bigger. After all, Batman star (and then-director) Ben Affleck previously used Twitter to tease Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke (a character and cast member who may no longer even be in the next Batman film since it's now being overhauled).
