The OMEN Challenge is back! And this year, the two-hour duo tournament will feature PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. This Saturday, live from TwitchCon 2017 and Twitch.tv, 40 of the top players in the world? are going to square off in a two-hour tournament battle royal. Read on to learn how it works.

Bending the Rules of Gaming

The OMEN Challenge was the first ever live-action tournament streamed on Twitch. Part LAN party, part eSports tournament, part sensory overload, it’s like watching people play Smite, Heroes of the Storm, or CS:GO in a mosh pit. Since its launch, the OMEN Challenge constantly evolves with new titles, new faces to find new ways to test player concentration, teamwork, and skill.

The OMEN Challenge draws some of the best players and teams, such as London Conspiracy, Titan, Dynasty Gaming Female, and FlipSid3 plus solo operators like Voyboy, Seltzer, FemSteph, and KittyPlaysGames have all competed in live and in front of the streaming audience.

But even top ranked players and popular streamers get put to the test in this format, because in the OMEN challenge, things get physical.

The OMEN Chamber

This is what sets the Challenge apart from other eSports events. Since 2015, OMEN by HP has been physically transforming theaters into spaces where danger stretches beyond the game and bleeds into the real world.

Players sit in specially constructed “torture chambers” filled with 4D effects that can range from electrical surges, to sonic booms, to compressed air traps. These torture chambers are specially designed for each new title and, in challenges past, players have had to brave freezing arctic blasts to the face courtesy of SMITE’s deities or dealt with blinding smoke from CS:GO’s grenades. And this year these tortures draw their inspiration from Erangel -- the main playable map of PUBG.

And if the game and the arena don’t get our contestants, there’s always the audience...

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds can be a game of bad luck. It breeds the kind of matches where skydiving and snipers are less lethal than frying pans and traffic cones. It’s where a player picking the wrong house can be a worse decision than picking the wrong gun.

But if luck is bad, imagine malicious intent.

Every few minutes, viewers on the live stream will be given a chance to vote to torture their team of choice — because playing a live competitive game in a torture chamber wasn’t difficult enough.

Audience members at the event can use an app to vote to torture and even occasionally be allowed to throw things at the competitors. In addition, the audience watching at home can also gets in on the fun through the stream — by logging in to (or signing up for) their Twitch account and vote via Twitch Chat on OMEN by HP’s channel. So everybody gets to unleash a little extra chaos on the islands.

The contestants have a lot against them: the hazards in-game, the pressure of competing live, a boobytrapped theater, and a bloodthirsty audience. So, it’s going to take a combination of skills, strategy, and teamwork to be the last contestants standing.
