Planet of the Apes Game Gets Surprise PS4 Release Today

Last Frontier uses a PlayLink mobile app on PS4.

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier has unexpectedly launched today for PlayStation 4.

The standalone cinematic adventure game is now available to purchase for $29.99 via the PSN Store. Last Frontier, which IGN exclusively revealed, was originally slated for Xbox One and PC as well, however as of press time the game is not listed on either of those systems' stores.

Last Frontier is set between the events of 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and this year’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Players take control of both humans and apes in the cinematic story. On PS4, Last Frontier has its own PlayLink app, allowing friends of a player to use their phones to help sway the direction of the game.

The game’s characters, because of the standalone 2-3 hour story and cast, can live or die based on your decisions, with multiple endings possible depending on the actions of both the humans and the apes. The player’s input into the game is entirely choice-based based on conversations and actions, with no exploration sections or puzzles, nor any direct control over characters.

Check out IGN's debut preview of Last Frontier for more on the game, which is made by first-time developer Imaginati. Imaginati is the new gaming division of Andy Serkis' motion-capture studio The Imaginarium.
