You'll Soon Be Able to Buy Overwatch Skins With Real Money... In China

Buy currency, get loot? What a novel idea!

Patch 1.12 is coming to Overwatch in China, and it's going to bring changes to the in-game currency.

Announced on the Overwatch forums (spotted by Polygon), Chinese players will now be able to purchase in-game currency using real world money, meaning they can unlock skins, emotes, and the like using their hard earned cash, rather than hoping they pop up in random loot boxes.

The purchasable credits come in relatively low denominations, however, making buying items such as legendary event skins extremely expensive.

Recently, China brought in new legislation requiring games to disclose the probability of getting each item from paid blind unlocks like Overwatch's loot box system.

There are five tiers of in-game credits you can buy, and they actually all each come with loot boxes in addition. This new approach seems to give Blizzard a way around the new laws by only giving the loot boxes away for free.

Overwatch recently celebrated its first anniversary with a new event, new cosmetics, and a whole new edition of the game to buy.
