Wonder Woman's Record-Breaking Box Office Debut

Pirates 5 suffers major drop in its second weekend.

Wonder Woman debuted in first place at the domestic box office, breaking the record for the biggest opening weekend of all time for a female director.

Director Patty Jenkins' new DC movie earned an estimated $100.5 million domestically, eclipsing Fifty Shades of Grey, the prior record holder for the biggest debut for a female director, which grossed just over $85 million when it opened in 2015. When compared to other superhero solo films, Wonder Woman's debut is bigger than both Iron Man and Doctor Strange, but behind the likes of Man of Steel, Deadpool and Spider-Man.

Wonder Woman has also performed quite well internationally thus far, raking in an additional $122.5 million from 55 foreign markets. The film still has yet to debut in several key markets, including France, Spain, Germany and Japan.

"This is a film that's perfect for our time; hopeful and inspiring, as well as a hugely entertaining adventure—it transcends the genre," Warner Bros. Pictures president of worldwide marketing and distribution Sue Kroll said in a statement. "Patty Jenkins and her exceptional cast and crew—led by the incomparable Gal Gadot—delivered a Wonder Woman that is true to the aspirational hero."

In addition to Wonder Woman, this weekend brought with it the debut of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Move. DreamWorks Animation's family friendly comedy, based on Dav Pilkey popular children's novel series, opened in second place at the domestic box office, earning an estimated $23.5 million.

Meanwhile, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales suffered a significant drop of over 65 percent in its second week. The film, which topped the box office last week with the franchise's second-lowest debut, slipped to third with $21.6 million.
