Veep: Season 6 Finale Review

The Vagi-brary Monologues.

Warning: Full spoilers for the Veep: Season 6 finale below.

Though it was only mentioned back toward the top of the season, Selina inevitably choosing to run for president again was a no-brainer. And while the writing may have been on the while, I still commend this season for maintaining her ex-president story the entire time, without half the season feeling like she had one foot back in the game. This year was about her legacy and her fumbling attempts to make her one year as Commander in Chief feel historic and meaningful.

I'll also commend this season finale, "Groundbreaking," for pulling the trigger on her new presidential bid and making it feel fresh and fun. Flashbacks were the name of the game here, along with hilarious moments both big and small, as we traveled back six years to Selina putting a halt to her presidential run (the intern running away from Amy was amazing!) and then her first day in office as VP.

We even went back so far as to see her both on the congressional campaign trail and giving birth the Catherine - with Andrew being a complete letch the entire time and Selina's coldness and coming through at both opportune (squeezing a donor out of cash after catching her with Andrew) and inopportune moments (not wanting anything to do with baby Catherine - "There's some black s*** is coming out of it!").

We got to see Jonah's first day in the White House, Gary's job before her worked for Selina (which is how he met Selina), Selina's overly-medicated stay in Whispering Sands (where Andrew weaseled his way back into her life), and Mike with a goatee! -- all while Selina had to out-maneuver a "vagi-brary" controversy and Catherine's "McLintock" cervix -- leading up to a finish that saw Selina decide to run again, Mike get replaced by Leon, Amy tell Dan that she was pregnant with his child, and Jonah...throw his "Outsider's Insider" hat into the ring for president as well. It was hectic and hilarious.

Other amazing laughs: Splett Pep, Marjorie yelping with genuine excitement over the Wipe Warmer, "one-sixteenth French Huguenot," Selina's "boo boo pat pat" to her new grandson, Ben telling Mike that he was "Mark David Chapman's bullet" of the Beatles, and so much more.

And then, right near the end of it was a genuine emotional moment - a rarity on Veep. Sure, the show dabbles in depressed wallowing and usually masks scenes involving true desperation and despair with marked humor, but Selina's tears after she broke up with Jaffar spoke volumes. Her crazed desire to be accepted and adored by strangers at the highest level of office possible had defeated her need to be accepted and adored by a man she genuinely cared for. She couldn't allow herself this type of true happiness and it was devastating.

The Verdict

Veep closed out its sixth season with a punchy parade of biting insults, hilarious jokes, and fun flashbacks that took us back years - even decades - to show us key moments in Selina's life.
