Valve Shows Off New 'Knuckles' VR Controller

Valve can make your hand clap.

Valve has given us a better look at its virtual reality controller on its Steam Community page. Dev kits for the controller, called Knuckles, are being sent out to developers directly from Valve.

The Steam page is a guide for devs, helping them sync and set up the drivers for the Knuckles dev kits, but it also shows off some of the features of the controller, including finger tracking.

For devs getting their hands on the controllers, Valve warns "finger tracking initializes to an uncalibrated state and will be very poor," requiring a calibration process, but the uncalibrated state fresh out of the box is "considered a temporary measure," and won't affect production units.

The finger tracking test involves opening up SteamVR Home and seeing if you "get the developer five fingered hands." The effect is pretty cool when seen in action, like in this short video from Owlchemy Labs' Fox Buchele.

In addition to regular buttons, the controllers also have buttons with capacitive sensors, and the finger sensors are also capacitive. The power buttons on the first iterations of the PS4 and Xbox One are capactive, so if you've ever turned your console on by accident, you know how sensitive they are to touch.

Design-wise, they look similar to the Oculus Touch controllers, but with a different, and presumably more expensive, approach to immersive VR controls.
