Though Transformers: The Last Knight debuted at the top of the box office this weekend, the fifth Transformers film delivered the lowest domestic opening of the franchise.
For more on how The Last Knight compares to its predecessors, check out the opening weekends, both adjusted and unadjusted for inflation, for all five Transformers films, as well as their total worldwide grosses. (Opening weekends here are qualified as the films' first three days in theaters as opposed to their first five, as Transformers films often open on Wednesdays.) Numbers via Box Office Mojo.
Transformers Film (Year/# of Theaters) | Opening Weekend | Opening Weekend, Adjusted | Total Worldwide Gross |
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017/4,069) | $45.3 million (estimated) | $45.3 million | $265.3 million (so far) |
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014/4,233) | $100 million | $103.4 million | $1.1 billion |
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011/4,088) | $97.9 million | $106.5 million | $1.12 billion |
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009/4,234) | $109 million | $124.3 million | $836.3 million |
Transformers (2007/4,011) | $70.5 million | $83.2 million | $709.7 million |
The Last Knight's opening, both adjusted and unadjusted, ranks as the lowest of the entire franchise, falling about $25 million unadjusted and $38 million adjusted below the next lowest debut, the 2007 Transformers film. (The fifth movie's five-day tally is approximately $69.1 million, which would still rank below all other Transformers' films three-day box office openings.)
The film has already amassed over $250 million worldwide, though, with releases in many countries still to come.
The weekend box office also saw a major shift in the DC Extended Universe, however. Wonder Woman, which in early estimates is tied with Cars 3 at the weekend box office, has now outpaced the other three DCEU films at this point in their domestic box office run. The Patty Jenkins-directed film overtook Man of Steel and Suicide Squad last week, and surpassed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on Saturday.
If estimates hold, Wonder Woman now stands at $318.4 million domestically, while Batman v Superman, at this point in its run, amassed $311.98 million. Batman v Superman still holds the overall DCEU domestic record with $330.36 million, a number Wonder Woman will likely pass by the end of next weekend.
Day-for-day box office, Wonder Woman has been the top-earning film for 19 out of its first 24 days in theaters compared to the first 24 days of every other DCEU film. Worldwide, Wonder Woman is currently the lowest earning of the four DCEU films, though it ranks only $16 million below Man of Steel, which means the Gal Gadot-starring film will also surpass that mark by the end of the week. Batman v Superman currently ranks as the highest-grossing film worldwide in the DCEU, having made $873.26 million — Wonder Woman has so far made $652.88 million.
