Transformers 5 Has Franchise's Lowest Opening Weekend

A lower debut than the first film had 10 years ago.

It seems like domestic audiences may have tired of Michael Bay's Transformers movies. The fifth film in the series, Transformers: The Last Knight, had a lackluster opening weekend at the North American box office, only making $45.3 million from Friday-Sunday. The Michael Bay-directed movie has earned $69.1 million since opening Wednesday.

To put that into perspective, the second lowest-grossing opening weekend for a Transformers film was the very first one in the Michael Bay series. That movie grossed $70.5 million in its opening weekend, but that was also a decade ago. When you adjust for inflation, The Last Knight's opening weekend becomes just that much more lackluster.

However, all is not lost. The last two Transformers films, Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction, each made over $1 billion worldwide thanks to larger international turnouts than the films had domestically. The Last Knight is off to a strong start overseas with a worldwide launch of $196.2 million. A whopping $123.4 million of that came from China alone, which gives the film a total global box office debut of $265.3 million.

Transformers: The Last Knight will need to continue to perform strongly internationally if it's to be considered a success.

Here are the top 10 estimated box office returns in North America for the weekend:

1. Transformers: The Last Night - $45.3 million

2. Cars 3 - $25.2 million

3. Wonder Woman - $25.2 million

4. 47 Meters Down - $7.4 million

5. All Eyez on Me - $5.9 million

6. The Mummy - $5.8 million

7. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - $5.2 million

8. Rough Night - $4.7 million

9. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie - $4.3 million

10. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - $3 million
