Studio Ghibli Theme Park Coming in 2020

"Trees and people used to be good friends."

Studio Ghibli, behind classic animated movies like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, is creating a theme park.

Variety reports Studio Ghibli is teaming up with Nagoya’s Aichi Prefecture for the park, which will be based on the film My Neighbor Totoro. The space is set to open in 2020.

The 200-hectare site for the park was previously home to the 2005 World's Fair, according to Kotaku. At that time, Satsuki and Mei's house from My Neighbor Totoro was re-created, so that's already there.

Earlier this year, Studio Ghibli cofounder Hayao Miyazaki announced he's coming out of retirement again to direct a new film. He's helmed some of the most iconic animated films ever, like Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky and Howl's Moving Castle.
