Star Wars Pinball Machine Revealed, Start Saving Your Quarters

Shoot first.

Star Wars will be the next pinball machine released by Stern Pinball Inc. The latest in a series of recent games based on mega-hit TV shows and movies (e.g. The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones), Stern's Star Wars will be themed around the original trilogy, not the most recent films.

Check out the first video of Star Wars pinball in action below. In addition to some cool toys, like an exploding Death Star, and a hyper space loop that sends balls flying around the perimeter of the playfield in a big, wire form loop, Star Wars will perhaps most notably feature film clips and sounds from the movies on its two LCD displays.

The video above shows off many of the features of Stern's newest Star Wars pinball machine.

No longer constrained by the orange pixels of the old dot matrix displays you may remember from pinball's past, Star Wars will feature one large screen on the backbox with video game-like graphics and full film clips. This is only the third Stern pinball machine to have this new display feature, after the recent releases Batman '66 and Aerosmith. Another smaller screen on the playfield itself will interact with three targets below it. For example, if three TIEs are shown on the screen, you'll have to shoot the targets below the screen to destroy the ships.

Three models of Star Wars have been announced: The Pro model has a different art package, plastic ramps, and fewer toys, while the Premium and Limited Edition (LE) models feature their own unique art, metal ramps, the cool hyper space loop, animated Death Star toy and other goodies you can see in action in the video above.

Stern's Star Wars was designed by pinball veteran Steve Ritchie, who is known for his speedy gameplay. His previous games include beloved classics like Black Knight 2000, Terminator 2, and Star Trek: The Next Generation -- so Star Wars is in good hands. You can see some behind-the-scenes images of the development of Stern's Star Wars machine on The Star Wars Show. There hasn't been a release date announced yet, but the release is planned to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, so Stern is taking orders now and you can expect to be playing Star Wars in an arcade this year. Or you can save up your quarters and buy one yourself. MSRP for the Pro model is $6199, while the Premium will run you $7,899, and the LE $8,999.
