Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel Will Start the MCU's Phase 4

Swinging in.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has revealed that the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming will mark the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's fourth Phase, and has revealed some small plot details about the 2019 movie.

Speaking to io9, Feige explained that the as-yet-untitled follow-up fourth Avengers movie (coming on May 3, 2019) will mark "the unprecedented conclusion to a 22-movie overarching narrative.” After that, Homecoming 2 (or whatever it turns out to be called), will start the next phase of the MCU.

“So much happens in [the 3rd and 4th Avengers movies], as you can imagine," Feige explained, "and so much is affected by it that we felt what better person to hold your hand and lead you into the next incarnation of the MCU, in a grounded, realistic manner, than Peter Parker? So, coming out two months after Untitled Avengers, [that’s what] much of what the next Spider-Man film will be about.”

Marvel Studios has traditionally used its 'Phases' to group sets of somewhat disparate films under a single narrative arc. Phase 4 may be more important than most, however - the end of Phase 3 not only brings with it an ominous comic book history (the printed Infinity War features the death of several major Avengers), but the end of contracts held by many of the MCU's most iconic actors, including Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), and Chris Hemsworth (Thor).

Feige explained that Homecoming 2 would likely be the only Phase 4 film formally announced until after Avengers 4's release (although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is all but a certainty at this point):

“I hope [the news comes] after that. I think there will be certain elements that start to come about, not the least of which is the already announced release date of the next Spider-Man film. But other than that we’re going to keep it very close to the vest."

Feige also revealed some small plot details about the sequel. This year's Homecoming will be set during Peter Parker's high school sophomore year, and its sequel won't be set much later, taking place during his junior year (possibly meaning both Infinity War and its sequel will be during his summer break, which sounds... hard).

“It was purposefully done like this,” Feige said. “Like how the events of Captain America: Civil War impacted Peter as he was dropped off by Tony and expected to go back to continue his sophomore year, how the hell are the events of Infinity War and Untitled [Avengers] going to affect him as he, yes, goes back to his junior year?”

Feige added that only broad strokes were completed for the Spidey sequel, and formal scripting will come later. We also know that Iron Man will be dropping out to be replaced by a different character for Spidey to team up with. It's still not clear where we'll be left after Homecoming 2, given that Spider-Man may leave the MCU after that film's conclusion.

We have a lot more films to get through in Phase 3 before we come to any of this, however. After Spider-Man: Homecoming is released on July 7, we have (deep breath) Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Captain Marvel, before it all comes to a head with with Avengers 4.
