Shawn Layden, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, has acknowledged the success of the Nintendo Switch.
During an interview with Time, Layden referred to the Switch as "a great success for Nintendo," explaining that "it's definitely what that fanbase has been waiting for." The Sony Boss doesn't seem threatened by the console and claimed that sales of the Switch haven't affected that of the PlayStation 4. Instead, he spoke of a more symbiotic relationship between Nintendo and Sony.
"When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family," explained Layden. "And quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side."
When asked about the portable console and whether or not Sony would be revisiting the market after the PlayStation Vita, Layden stated that Sony has no plans for a portable successor and is still looking to the Vita as a viable development platform but the focus is on Japan.
"To be honest, the Vita just didn't reach critical mass in the U.S. or Western Europe," he said. "I don't know if it was that it was more technology people had to carry around, or more things to charge, or whether their phone or tablet were taking care of that. But once the content slowed in that pipeline, it became hard to keep the Vita as a going concern."
The success of the Nintendo Switch is undeniable with the hybrid holding the best-selling console in the US in April and studies revealing that more people are interested in purchasing a Switch than either of Sony or Microsoft's upgraded units.
