Orange is the New Black: Season 5 Spoiler Discussion Page

Let's talk about how things ended for the Litchfield inmates this year.

If you haven't finished all 13 new episodes of Orange is the New Black, then you should probably turn back. This piece, specifically, contains spoilers about the ending and other parts of the story. To read my non-spoilery review of Orange is the New Black: Season 5, head here.

I assume that most of us knew, while watching Season 5, that things wouldn't end well for the inmates. Not just because people from both inside and outside the prison kept reiterating this particular idea, that things would go sideways, but also because it's not the nature of the show to give its characters that big a win. And so because we knew a storm was coming, it was hard to engage in most of the comedy that the season tried to deliver on its way toward the finish.

That being said, you also knew that things wouldn't end too terribly. As in, we weren't going to see another major character get murdered. We weren't going to get a repeat of Season 4. Poussey's death basically made it so everyone had to make it out of this season alive. Save of Piscatella, however, who got to get taken out by another brutally overzealous officer in a bit of on-the-nose (almost literally) death play. So while things seemed grim for our final 10 holdouts (the swarming cops were ready to use lethal force), it's unlikely that any of them will fall. Unless Season 6 feels the need to do something huge right at the outset (since we faded out here before we learned everyone's full fate).

But Piscatella's death probably means that the officers now will use a bit of restraint when entering the abandoned pool room and aren't just going to open fire on a line of ladies holding their hands up. His death meant that Chapman, Taystee, Red, and the rest were now in the clear because the cops would now be looking to actively not add another casualty to the operation.

What is everyone's fate now though? Where's everyone headed if not to "Max?" And is it weird that one of the most emotional moments during the entire season was when Maritza and Flaca were separated? Maybe it's because they were able to provide moments of comedy that didn't feel like it was infringing, or impeding, on the drama. "Flaritza" was harmless side fun that didn't ruin anything notable for anyone else.

Speaking of duos, did Leanne and Angie actually do something good at the end by lighting all the records on fire? They were such a frustrating force all season that it'd be nice if their actions unintentionally helped people overall. Granted, it means that it'll be a nightmare for Linda to ever get out of prison now, but will the lack of records mean, legally, that a bulk of the characters stand a good shot at getting second chances? Or will the fire just add to the chaos and cause everyone to become even more lost in the shuffle?

What wil become of Daya? Will Sophia just rot back in Max now? How will all of this legally shake out and who will get blamed for the mess? This wasn't Orange's strongest season as the "one long event" experiment made it even more of a challenge both tonally and structurally, but I'm still invested in the majority of these characters and want to see how things play out.
