Nearly One in Every Five PS4s Sold Is a PS4 Pro

"People just want the best"

An interview with PlayStation executives from Europe and America has revealed that the PlayStation 4 Pro accounts for about 20 percent of PS4 systems currently being sold.

When talking to Glixel, the CEO of Sony Entertainment Europe Jim Ryan, stated that the success of the PS4 Pro exceeded the company's expectations, with the PS4 Pro accounting for nearly one of every five PS4s sold.

"We were confident about the product but have really been taken aback by how well it's done," Ryan said. "Almost one in five PlayStations sold since that launch in November has been a Pro. That's significantly ahead of our expectations. We're feeling pretty good about that."

Not only are sales strong for the PS4 Pro according to Sony, but also nearly 40 percent of purchases are upgrades from the PS4 to the more powerful iteration of the console.

"Sometimes I think we can be guilty of ascribing too much rationality to gamers," Ryan explained. "People just want the best. Maybe they just want to future proof? I think we see the same thing from Apple customers too — there are people that want the best that you can buy."

Sales for the PlayStation 4, in general, have been successful for Sony, with the company having reached its goal of shipping 60 million units early this year. For more on the PS4 Pro, check out all of the game upgrades and differences available to those with the console.

Ryan also discussed the sales success of PlayStation VR while Sony Interactive Entertainment America's Shawn Layden revealed Horizon: Zero Dawn has sold 3.4 million copies.
