Ex-Gambit Director on the Challenge That Movie Faces

He exited Dark Universe last month.

I chatted with Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman today about his upcoming true crime movie American Made (look for that interview next week), during which time I also asked him about two high-profile comic book movies he's dropped out of directing: Justice League Dark (aka Dark Universe) and Gambit.

Liman had been talking up Justice League Dark as recently as last month before the news broke that he had parted ways with the project. In that case, Liman's plate was simply too full to end up accommodating the DC Comics adaptation.

"I was really excited by the characters and that world, but I’m doing Chaos Walking for Lionsgate next and then Tom [Cruise] and I are hoping to do the sequel to Edge of Tomorrow so it just became a scheduling nightmare," Liman said.

He added, "That’s the problem with directing. Producers can do multiple films, you know? Directing is like being married."

Like Justice League Dark, 20th Century Fox's Gambit movie has also been mired in development hell for years. Liman, who became attached to direct the X-Men spin-off starring Channing Tatum in late 2015, dropped out of Gambit in August 2016 to make Justice League Dark instead. Liman then exited Justice League Dark last month.

Liman recently said he quit Gambit because he couldn't develop a personal connection with the project, but in our chat today he remained hopeful that the long-gestating Marvel Comics adaptation would one day make it to the screen.

"You know, it’s a crowded field of superhero films so the challenge for Gambit or any of those other movies is finding its unique space and its unique take," Liman told me. "But, yeah, I think Simon Kinberg, who is producing it, is a great producer and he’ll create something great out of it."

Liman's next movie, American Made, flies into theaters this September.
